PGA One and Done: Expert PGA Picks This Week for Travelers Championship | Paul Casey

The PGA Tour continues bouncing between coasts with the Travelers Championship set to begin. Last week, we had the US Open in Torrey Pines out in California, and now we go all the way back to Connecticut at TPC River Highlands for this week’s event. The post-major hangover is real, but the Travelers Championship is a quality event that is a regular stop during the PGA season. For PGA One and Done, every week is important and the money all counts equally regardless of which week it comes from. We are starting to get to the homestretch, so each week becomes that much more difficult as fewer and fewer golfers are available to you. We’re looking to get into the expert PGA picks this week to help you make up any ground you may have lost.

Last week, Jon Rahm took down The US Open Championship for a major breakthrough that seemed inevitable given how good he is. Coming off a Memorial Tournament where he would have won if not for the COVID withdraw, it’s safe to say he is playing like the No. 1 player in the world. Outside of Rahm, there were several other big-name guys towards the top of the leaderboard last week, which means a ton of money was handed out in most pools. We now look to a week with less star power which means more opportunities to take some chances with our PGA One and Done selection. For an in-depth look at this Travelers Championship course and field make sure to check out all the DFS golf picks and golf betting content for all of our expert PGA picks this week.

What is a One and Done pool?

A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that you cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week you have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become your points. You cannot use the same player twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning is in line for a big payoff. Your pool will pay several spots, depending on its size, similar to a GPP structure that we all know from PGA DFS.

US Open Recap

Jon Rahm

We have mentioned Rahm basically every week for the past month, as he consistently puts himself in contention in these tournaments. Coming into the US Open, everything was clicking and there was a reason both the sportsbooks and our premium PGA DFS projections at Awesemo had him as the favorite to win the tournament. The problem was more that Rahm was already in fantastic spots all season, so a ton of people — including me — didn’t have him available in some pools. If you did have that option and took the Spaniard, you were rewarded with $2.25 million added to the PGA One and Done bank.

Shane Lowry

As a popular punt option, Lowry was available basically for everyone. He had been playing fantastic golf heading into the US Open and is built for tough conditions. Lowry found the weekend, which is always Step 1, but a horrible Sunday really landed him at the bottom of the board. The 65th-place finish was only good for $23,000, which isn’t going to make much of an impact long-term. This was one of the few spots Lowry was going to be considered all season so the one benefit is you still may have some bigger names available for the stretch run.

Xander Schauffele

Similar to Rahm, Schauffele came into Torrey Pines with a lot of buzz. He is a San Diego guy who has the game to compete at any US Open, which the history has proven out. In his four starts, his worst finish was sixth, and that type of consistency is hard to find. Schauffele didn’t really get into the mix, but once again, he found himself on the first page of the leaderboard with his T7 finish. That was good for a $306,000 payday, and one of the better showings outside Rahm. Eventually, this guy is going to knock down the door and win one of these tournaments, but, until then, we can still rely on his stability and floor in certain formats.

Travelers Championship PGA One and Done Picks This Week

Bryson DeChambeau

The wheels fell off for DeChambeau on Sunday with a back-nine he’d like to forget. That seems to be one of the drawbacks with his style, as when it goes bad, it goes extremely bad. Still, there were plenty of positives to take away with DeChambeau last week, as he crushed it off the tee and with the putter. He gained 5+ strokes in both categories, and that is a recipe for producing wins on the PGA Tour. He heads to the Travelers Championship with good results in the past, including three straight Top-10 finishes. With most people soured by his horrendous finish to last week, it’s not the worst idea to grab him here and hope others stay away.

Bubba Watson

The US Open usually isn’t Watsons ideal venue, and last week’s 50th proved that out. Still, he found the weekend and now heads to one of his favorite stops on tour — TPC River Highlands. Watson has won this event three times since 2010 and knows how to play this course and give himself plenty of chances. That type of elite course history will get a lot of attention, but most likely Watson is available to you given his average-at-best form this season.

Paul Casey

Another player who seems to love the setup at the Travelers Championship is Paul Casey. He was runner up to Watson in two of those wins and has plenty of experience around this course. It’s no surprise he competes well here given it’s a second-shot course that puts emphasis on your ball-striking. That is the strength of Casey’s game, and he arrives off a seventh-place finish last week at the US Open.

More importantly than last week’s finish is the approach numbers, which are on fire for the Englishman. Casey has gained at least 5 strokes on the approach in three straight events including +8.1 at the PGA Championship in late May. If he continues those type of numbers, he will breeze through this cut and, once again, give himself a good chance to be holding this trophy come Sunday. On the DFS side, our Awesemo PGA DFS ownership projections have Casey as the highest-owned player on the entire slate, so this could be another way to get exposure to him outside his chalky DFS situation.

Travelers Championship PGA One and Done Pick This Week: Paul Casey

All of these guys are going to be on peoples mind this week as we head to the Travelers Championship, so if you are looking for a low-owned guy, these aren’t the best selections. They are, however, some of the strongest plays in the field and primed to compete in what is a decently strong Travelers Championship. Paul Casey is one of the more consistent players on tour and he is starting to carve out several venues that he seemingly is always in contention at each year. Travelers would qualify, as Casey can lean on the ball-striking and has been so close to finally taking this tournament down.

Although we want a win each week in One and Done the floor is also important and Casey is one of the more reliable Top-20 type wagers in this field. He is going to be a popular play in all formats, and if you have him available, he has to be in the conversation for your One and Done PGA picks this week.
