⛳ PGA One and Done Picks: Top Golfers for the 2021 Genesis Invitational

After a relatively weak field at the Pebble Beach Pro Am, the PGA Tour closes out the West Coast string with the Genesis Invitational. For PGA One and Done, this is going to be a week where you possibly deploy one of the big names, as this is major-level field filled with most of the top players in the world. Last week Daniel Berger found the winner’s circle and cashed a monster $1.4 million check for anyone who went there for their One and Done pools.

What is a PGA One and Done pool?

A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that you cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week you have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become your points. You cannot use the same player twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning is in line for a big payoff. Your pool will pay several spots, depending on its size, similar to a GPP structure that we all know from PGA DFS.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am Recap

Patrick Cantlay

When Dustin Johnson withdrew last week, it instantly became Patrick Cantlay at the top of betting boards across the industry. He jumped out to an early lead on Thursday but was unable to close on Sunday, finishing third for $460,000. All in all, that is a solid payday, even if it felt like a letdown considering where Cantlay stood after Day 1. He was one of the more popular choice in most One and Done pools, so a lot of people added almost a half a million to their yearly total. Cantlay is one of the most consistent cut makers on tour, and it seems like no matter when you use him you will at least get some money out of the week.

Jason Day

Even though Jason Day has struggled to begin 2021, there were a lot of people (including me) who were interested in going to him at a course he absolutely crushes. Day came into the week needing a good result after a missed cut at Waste Management and responded with a seventh-place finish, which is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately with Berger, Cantlay and Paul Casey ahead of him, you didn’t pick up ground if you went here, but he also didn’t hurt you a ton with his $228,000 in earnings. Plus, unless you are much higher on Day than the public, you aren’t too upset that he is no longer available for the rest of the PGA One and Done season.

Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth was another player hoping to build on recent success, and his third-place finish certainly did that. He had the lead entering Sunday, and for Spieth One and Done backers, it was an opportunity to make a move given that many people weren’t fully back him. Spieth, unfortunately, wasn’t able to hang on to the lead, but he still landed third-place money.

With Spieth starting to show form, it now is realistic for most teams to use him at some point this season. That will create an interesting dynamic, as many will want to cash in on this run of form, while others may wait to see how this first part of the season plays out for a guy still working back from major struggles.

Genesis Invitational One and Done Picks

Dustin Johnson

Sometimes in One and Done you can be too reliant on planning for the future rather than trying to rack up cash in the present. This week has a $9.3 million prize pool with $1.6 million to the winner, so getting it right will go a long way to winning any One and Done pool this season. Right now Dustin Johnson is on a run where he is far and away the betting favorite anytime he chooses to tee it up. He is coming off a win in Saudi Arabia, and dating back to the end of last season, he has three wins in his last eight events. Even more impressive may be that he was third or better in six of the eight starts, so he still cashes a massive payday even when he doesn’t win.

If for some reason that recent form wasn’t enough to convince you, add in that Johnson absolutely loves this tournament and has a number of top finishes here, including a win back in 2017. He has everything lined up this week for another big finish and is clearly the safest option on the board. Like most top-end players, it’s a question of burning him here or waiting for a major to deploy the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer.

Adam Scott

In a field of this caliber, Adam Scott isn’t going to leap off the page despite being the defending champ. Since that win last year at Genesis, Scott hasn’t played a ton, but he is without a top-five finish and has just one top-10 during that stretch. On the positive side, that top-10 came at the Farmers two weeks ago, and Scott has just one missed cut in a full calendar year.

We know that Scott’s game translates well here at Riviera with his world-class iron game and seemingly comfortable conditions on the greens. That has translated to a number of quality finishes and seven straight made cuts at this event. If you don’t want to go all the way to the top, going right back to the defending champ seems reasonable in one of the few spots I would consider using him this season.

Bubba Watson

If there is one golfer on the PGA Tour who just has certain tracks he loves and others he hates, it has to be Bubba Watson. The unofficial term “Bubba course” is uttered all the time when trying to figure out if it’s a place Watson will love or one that doesn’t fit his eye. He has won twice at Augusta, twice at Travelers and three times here at Riviera, so clearly this course is one he excels at. His abilities off the tee translate well here, and coming off a 22nd-place finish at Waste Management has him back in the conversation. Watson gained 5.2 strokes tee to green in the desert, and with this course history, the upside is the $1.6 million top prize.

My Genesis Invitational PGA One and Done Pick: Dustin Johnson

I am very interested to see how ownership unfolds this week. There are so many top-end players, and the allure of waiting until majors to use the very best like Johnson looms large. He is the significant favorite in the betting markets and should be in contention once again this week. As much as I would love to have him available for a number of tournaments later in the season, I am sticking with my approach of trying to stay in the hunt early and figure out the rest as the season unfolds. With how deep the PGA Tour is, I will still have a ton of top options available, and this week I get the No. 1 ranked player in the world at the height of his powers.
