PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight for the Safeway Open 3 l Play for $20K

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings + FanDuel daily fantasy lineups and give you a couple of recommendations for the Tour Championship. On a typical showdown contest, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first for rounds 2 and 3 showdown and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first for most weekends. Lastly, FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first.

Previous Round Commentary and Lineup

Sam Burns has one of the lowest 36 hole score to par we’ve seen on tour in quite a while, backing up a 64 in round one with a 65 in round two. The talent and pedigree have always been there, but he just hadn’t found his breakthrough yet. Maybe it’s this week. From the morning wave, Cameron Percy also put together another good round and has his best chance to win in quite some time. Harry Higgs was the biggest mover on the day, and morning wave, going TEN under, with an ALBATROSS  on the last, and seven other birdies.

Plenty of other low scores out there today as well, including Doug Ghim, who was the sneaky pick in last night’s article! Tour vets Kevin Streelman & Jim Furyk also made it to the weekend here in Napa with a six-under 66 on Friday. Anirban Lahiri also found something out there in the morning after a two-over 74 on Thursday. He bounced back with a 65 on Friday.

In the afternoon wave, overnight leader Russell Knox was able to back up his 63 with a decent round today, shooting 69. He leads the afternoon wave of golfers, sitting three back of Burns. D.J. Trahan & tourney fav Si Woo Kim had the low rounds of the afternoon with 65. Nick Watney also came in with 65 earning setting him up nicely after an opening-round 72.

Previous Round Stat Review

Silverado resort didn’t prove to be much of a test for the PGA Tour players today, with the scoring average coming in just north of 70 at 70.12. Almost two under. A two day scoring average shy of 141 moves the cut to -5, the lowest we’ve seen since the restart. The low rough around the course has proven to be easily handled by the players, as they can hit driver off almost any hole.

BOB Leaders in round 2

  1. James Hahn (10)
  2. Sam Burns, & Beau Hossler (9)
  3. Harry Higgs, Ricky Barnes Chesson Hadley (8)

Strokes Gained Ball Striking vs. Putting

Chez Reavie hasn’t been able to find his putting stroke through two rounds and leads this category. Even with a good day in round two, Will Gordon looks primed to make a move over the weekend, as does Bo Hoag, C.T. Pan, Branden Grace, who have all gained more than three strokes with the ball striking than they have putting.

Top 10 Breakdown and Picks

It may be a few names that you haven’t heard yet, but Sam Burns & Harry Higgs certainly provide for some entertainment, with others like Doug Ghim & Russell Knox trailing behind. There are no “studs” in the top 10, which makes it even more compelling, with the closest one being Brendan Steele, who sits six back. A few names you may recognize in there from years past is James Hahn, who seems to love his California golf, and another guy from CA, Pat Perez. They’ll have a great chance at their first win in quite some time.

Brian Stuard ($7,400)

The OG fav of mine might have to become the primary fav of mine with these type of performances, especially in weaker field events, got hot with his irons in the second round. He’s always been a good putter, and on a course that’s not long, it fits his game. He’s not going to blow you away off the tee, but he has gained in each of the first two, telling me he’s got a good enough feel for it to keep giving himself chances with those irons.

Stud or Value Pick Outside of Top 10

Emiliano Grillo ($8,700)

The ball striking is back, with another two rounds in a row in which he gained at least a stroke with his irons, and has gained at least .25 with his driver as well. Something we highlighted, he had been doing quite a bit in the strokes gained article. He’s reasonably priced and isn’t likely on that many gamers radars, except for our guy Ben Rasa of course.

Sneaky Pick Outside of Top 10

Will Gordon ($7,100)

A solid bounce-back round for Gordon yesterday, coming in with a 67, and yet to find his putter in both rounds, he also gained over a stroke on his irons, and a half as stroke with his driver in each. That’s a great recipe for success here, and now he just needs the putter to cooperate. That’ll come, either tomorrow or Sunday or hopefully, both.

Lineup Fill-Ins

Doug Ghim ($6,600)

Akshay Bhatia ($6,700)

Ryan Blaum ($6,100)

Si Woo Kim ($10,200)
