PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight Round 2 of the Bermuda Championship

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings + FanDuel daily fantasy lineups and give you a couple of recommendations for the second round of the Bermuda Championship. On a typical Showdown contest, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first for rounds 2 and 3 showdown and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first for most weekends. Lastly, FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final-round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first.

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

With a short par 4 on each side for the starting hole, followed by the second hole being a par 5, birdies started flying quickly. Peter Malnati emerged rather quickly, but not as quickly as Doc Redman, who shot 29 on his front nine holes. He shot 1 under on his next nine for a solid 65 on the day. Malnati’s approach and game and putter stayed hot, hitting almost 80% of his greens in round 1 and averaging just 1.357 putts per hole.

Also, from the morning wave, Doug Ghim looks to be in some good form after going out and posting 64, one of his lowest rounds in quite some time. Wyndham Clark is also putting himself into position for his second straight good start, coming off of a 13th-place finish in his last outing. There was mild wind in the morning that picked up throughout the day a bit in terms of the conditions, which kept the field pretty closely packed together. An even-par 71 ties for 80th right now.

Afternoon Wave:

Ryan Armour is breathing life into a little course history debate, as he flashed all parts of his game today. He hit 72% of his greens, averaged 1.615 putts and chipped in at least once during the round from off the green. His stellar 64% driving accuracy was not half bad either. Vaughn Taylor is also enjoying the island life this week, looking for his first paycheck since returning from injury. Chase Seiffert popped up again, while Hunter Mahan may be the best feel-good story of round 1.

Emiliano Grillo and Josh Teater also put in good rounds and sit just 3 back of Malnati, along with Ollie Schniederjans, who has a chance to resurrect his career this week. Also, Stewart Cink decided to bring his son back on the bag as a caddie. And wouldn’t you know, he’s back to top-10 form, shooting 66 on the day.

*Note: For some reason, the statistical feed is down for the tournament. However, if you go to the leaderboard on the PGA Tour website and click each individual player’s name, you can get Greens in Regulation, Driving Accuracy, Distance and Putts per Greens in Regulation.

General Strategy and PGA DFS Picks

Not having a working feed is quite an annoyance when trying to compare golfers. It’s rather ancient the way we have to go out about it in this day and age when betting is becoming more and more prevalent. Anyway, I’ll try and do my best to sift through the leaderboard and find some stats we can take into tomorrow’s round.

Also, before we go on, the wind will be blowing 25-35 miles per hour all day tomorrow, which is sure to blow up the leaderboard. Right now the cut sits at -1, but with 30 mph winds expected, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to that move to even par, or possibly even +1.

Top 10

Ryan Armour ($7,200)

He’s already one of the shortest hitters on tour, so the wind won’t really affect Armour much. In fact, his average measured drive off the tee today was only 261 yards, one of the shortest in the field. His superb around-the-green game and hot putter should also help him save par when needed, which should be plenty tomorrow. He has a good salary as well to add to the beginning of the lineup. I also like Schniederjans, Clark, Grillo and Ghim.

Stud or Value Pick Outside the Top 10

Will Zalatoris ($10,200)

Even for Zalatoris’ aggressive mindset, he wasn’t expected to hit 35% of his fairways in round 1. It’s one of his first times playing the course, so I’m sure he’ll adapt over the next few days. Even still, he was able to hit almost 80% of his greens but likely wasn’t hitting it that close given the fact that he was coming out of the rough for most of them, and his putts per greens in regulation were on the high side at 1.79. I’ll stick with elite ball striking in the wind tomorrow.

Sneaky Pick Outside the Top 10

Padraig Harrington ($6,900)

I won’t take Harrington’s word for granted any longer, as he sounded incredibly confident in where his game is right now. Add in the fact that he’s been adamant his entire career that windy conditions favor him, and that’s what’s on the horizon for round 2. While he only hit 50% of his fairways in round 1, he didn’t get himself into much trouble, as he wound up hitting almost 80% of his greens. Fire up the Irishmen for round 2 and watch him grind out a solid under-par round in tough conditions.

Lineup Fill-Ins

Doc Redman ($9,600)

Justin Suh ($8,800)

Andrew Putnam ($7,200)

Hank Lebioda ($6,600)
