Round 2 Roundup
Saturday morning brought us one of the most epic cut sweats we’ve ever experienced, which made skipping the round three slate quite easy. It came down to the last groups on the course, with the golfers in the clubhouse at even-par having to hold their collective breath several times over the last few holes. Ultimately, they wound up getting through on the score. Sixty golfers were at par or better, giving us an even 10 threesomes going off each on either side of the course at the 10:30 am start time.
That gave the golfers enough time to finish their third rounds before sunset at Augusta on Saturday, getting the Masters back on schedule. We know how important that is to CBS, they want as much of the final round to fall before the 1 p.m. start of football coverage in numerous large television markets.
Previous Round Recap
One of the first golfers to start the third round was Rory McIlroy, who was fresh off a 66 in the second round, beating his day one score by nine shots. He remained hot, shooting 32 on the front side, but ran into trouble again on 13 and wound up only adding on more, finishing with a 67.
Dylan Frittelli matched Rory with a 67, continuing his good form this week at Augusta. None of them, however, looked nearly as good, confident and in control of their game than tournament leader Dustin Johnson. He shot a tournament-best 65 on Saturday. He looks poised to break the Masters scoring record of 18-under-par this weekend, a mark reached by both Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. Johnson will have a chance to make some history on Sunday.
He’ll be joined in the last group by Sungjae Im & Abraham Ancer. At 12-under, Cameron Smith will be in the penultimate group with Dylan Frittelli & Justin Thomas.Â

General Strategy and PGA DFS Picks for Sunday at the Masters
Prime course conditions at Augusta and possibly the best form we’ve ever seen from Dustin Johnson have given him a large lead going into tomorrow. We saw him absolutely throttle the competition at the Northern Trust, so to suggest that he might take his foot off the gas is unlikely to happen. Johnson is justifiably expensive for tomorrow’s final round slate, coming in at $10,600 on DraftKings. To win a large field GPP, you’ll need more than just Johnson in your lineup, so his price is a big factor in roster construction. With green speeds increasing throughout the day, we want to focus on golfers who hit the greens the most, in the hope that they find lightning in a bottle in the final round. Remember, finishing points are allocated to players for final round scoring on DraftKings.
Here is the top 10 in Greens in Regulation heading into the final round:
- Dustin Johnson 87%
- Abraham Ancer 83%
- Justin Thomas 77%
- Marc Leishman 77%
- Kevin Na 77%
- Billy Horschel 75%
- Shane Lowry 75%
- Louis Oosthuizen 75%
- Brooks Koepka 75%
- Xander Schauffele 75%
PGA DFS Picks: Golfers Inside the Current Top 10:
Sunday’s GPPs are going to be decided by who does the best job of identifying low-owned high-upside golfers who are not named Dustin Johnson. DraftKings appropriately waited to price the golfers for the final round slate and came up with fantastic pricing as a result. The lowest-priced golfer in the top 10 is Sebastian Munoz coming in at $7,700. Munoz has played great golf this week. If you think that gamers try to focus on Frittelli, Ancer and Sungjae Im, Munoz could be a nice pivot in that range. Still, he should be at least 20% owned.
The lowest owned golfer in the top 10 is likely to be either Brooks Koepka or Patrick Cantlay, who are both priced in the mid $9,000s, with Rory McIlroy below them. I don’t think many people will pick Brooks or Patrick over Rory with a lower salary. In fact, aside from Dustin Johnson, Rory will likely be the highest owned golfer making the loop at Augusta tomorrow.
Three Presidents Cup teammates will be in most of the lineups tomorrow. Cameron Smith, Sungjae Im & Abraham Ancer are all likely to be around 30-40% owned in the final round slate. Picking the right one will likely be a big factor in hitting the best lineup tomorrow.
Patrick Cantlay’s late bogey pushed him outside the top 10, he will definitely be the lowest owned golfer priced over $9,000 tomorrow.
PGA DFS Picks From Outside the Top 10:
- Cameron Champ had a fantastic day, and not just with the driver. A two-eagle front nine boosted him up the leaderboard, giving him a chance at a second top to finish in a major this year. Champ’s ownership was low throughout this week, but I think that might change tomorrow. Still, he seems to be really in form, and I’m sure he’d love to put up a top 10 on his card for a first-timer at Augusta.
- Bryson DeChambeau has been the talk of the town this week, but he hasn’t really shown up. He shot 69 on Saturday and might have found something on his back 9. He was around 15% owned for round three and since finishing points will be allocated, he will likely fall under that for the final round slate. I’ll gamble a couple of lineups away on the possibility of a two or even three-eagle day.
- Collin Morikawa found himself getting through to the weekend right on the cutline in his first Masters start. He almost missed the cut by bogeying his 36th hole, but ultimately helped the even-par golfers stay in the tournament. Now, at $7,800, his price is way down. It seems likely no one is thinking about him with Munoz around the same price. A 66 would likely push Morikawa close to a top 10 and would certainly outperform a lot of golfers above him on the current leaderboard. Morikawa provides a nice leverage spot for tomorrow’s final round.
- Nick Taylor was one of the golfers at even-par after 36 holes. He made the most of it in round three, shooting a three-under 69. Taylor reached 13 of 18 of Augusta’s greens for the second time in three days to post that score. At $6,500, Taylor presents a great salary to try and really stuff a several studs in your lineup.
