PGA DFS DraftKings Showdown Spotlight- Round 2 Valero Texas Open

Showdown Spotlight

DraftKings created the single round showdown format last year for the PGA, and it has caught on enough to come back again for this year! Much to my surprise as well, the contest sizes are not bad at all! This column is meant to be a quick hitter article, give you the stats you need to make informed decisions, and give you a couple of recommendations to start your lineup.

DraftKings is offering 5K to first place for tomorrow’s round 2 slate!

Round 2 Preview:

Model:

Commentary:

Si Woo Kim rode a hot, very hot putter in round 1 gaining almost four strokes with the putter. He matched that by gaining 1.64 strokes ball striking, an obviously good combination that will always facilitate low scores. Although, we don’t expect him to gain four strokes per round putting the rest of the week. On the other end of that spectrum, Jhonnattan Vegas who continued his strong play, gained over 4 strokes tee to green, while only managing to gain .32 putting. Jon Senden had one of the worst day’s putting we’ve seen in a long time, losing over four strokes, while KH Lee had a great day tee to green, ranking second, but ended up losing over a stroke putting. Since Spieth is inside the top 10 and I can’t focus on him for my pick– I’ll mention that his approach game looks great. He didn’t have a ton of a chance to gain strokes around the green cause of that stellar approach game but looked good putting as well. Only struggled off the tee a bit, but not significantly as the rough has been cut down this year.

My Round 2 Showdown Picks:*Remeber these picks are focusing on golfers outside the top 10:

Stud Pick:

The model likes Jim Furyk, who has been playing some great golf. In round 1, he hit his irons well again, and while he didn’t gain anything off the tee, you really don’t expect him too, cranking out 280 yard stingers. Next would be Jason Korkak, then Luke List, all the way down to Aaron Baddeley. I did leave out who the model likes best, and it will be who I start my lineups with after Jordan…

Byeong Hun An ($9,000)

Hun An started his round a couple over but wound up getting it all the way to -4. He faltered coming in and didn’t make birdie finishing the day at -3, while gaining 2.5 strokes from tee to green. He also was able to manage a POSITIVE in the strokes gained-putting category, something that will come up within arms reach of the top 5 if that keeps up all week. That’s the type of bets we like to place.

Value Pick:

The model loves J.B. Holmes, who gained the third most strokes tee to green while losing almost three-quarters of a stroke putting. It’s certainly an encouraging thing to see from Holmes, who already won on the year, and played decently last week at the Match Play going 2-1. After him comes Rory Sabbatini, the surprising Sung Kang Chalk. I’m going to need a little more salary relief though and head to

Matt Jones($7,400)

Matt struggled around the green yesterday, which really hindered his SG:T2G. He still gained almost a shot and a quarter ball striking, and also gained over a stroke putting. He’s obviously in good form shooting a couple of good scores last week in the Dominican followed up here with a nice -2 70. Matt provides some nice salary relief and we know can take it low.

Sneaky Pick

Corey Conners who spent most of the day inside the top 10, had a couple of late falters, and wound up finishing with a 69. He gained over three strokes tee to green, and for a guy that’s priced at 6700, you can bet will be very popular. The aforementioned KH Lee is next on the list followed by Cameron Tringale. Then comes:

Shawn Stefani ($6,500)

Shawn has had a decent year this year, fighting for his job playing out of the web.com graduates, Stefani gained over 3 strokes tee to green in round 1, with 2.83 of them coming from his approaches. That’s an avery encouraging stat for a guy priced this low and will allow you to get a couple of studs in the lineups!

Others we like to round out the lineups:

Tony Finau ($10,300)

Luke List ($8,600)

J.B. Holmes ($7,700)

Corey Conners ($6,700)
