PGA DFS Picks & Fantasy Golf: The Bermuda Championship

Players head from Vegas and California to the opposite coast in Bermuda this week as the PGA Tour prepares for Augusta. Just two weeks away from the best golf tournament of the year, the fields will go back to resembling what we saw at the Corales Championship a few weeks ago. That means crazy prices and high volatility. If you’re into that style, then these next two weeks will suit you.

The Tournament & Format

The island of Bermuda, which is still a sovereign state of the UK, will host the PGA Tour this week as the tour heads to Bermuda for the second playing of the Bermuda Championship. Brendon Todd’s resurgence in the game of golf started here last year with a win, and a few weeks later, he would win his second straight start at the OHL Mayakoba Classic. The event is hosted at Port Royal Golf Course and is designed by Robert Trent Jones.

There are 132 players and a cut after 36 holes.

The Course: Port Royal Golf Club

Much like the Corales Championship a few weeks ago, the course is a beautiful seaside layout that is shorter by PGA Tour standards, coming in at just shy of 6,900 yards. While the Dominican borders the Caribbean Sea, this course buds right up against the rocky Atlantic Ocean, not that there’s much difference other than water temperature. The signature hole on the course is the 16th hole, a longer par 3, that bends around the cliffs that overhang the ocean. It is a pretty sight but a daunting hole, playing as one of the toughest on the course last year.

The course, like many of the seaside courses, gets its protection from the wind. The winning score last year was -24 for a par 71. There were plenty of other low scores as well, with more than seven golfers shooting -18 or better for the week.

The course was built back in the 1970s by Trent Jones Sr. It got turned over to the Bermuda Government for the management and went through a massive renovation in 2009. The renovation drew in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, and now it is a staple of the tours rotation over the fall circuit.

Course Facts & Figures

Par and Yardage

  • Par 71: 6,900 yards

Course Difficulty

  • The average score was just under 70 last year or -1.15 under par. The cut line was -1.

Hole Dispersion:

  • Four Par 3’s: 148, 213, 235, 235
  • 11 Par 4’s: 438, 458, 380, 370, 383, 350, 443, 383, 393, 412, 410
  • Three Par 5’s: 553, 517, 507

Facts and Figures

  • Off the Tee: One of the major differences between here and Corales is the driving accuracy. It ranked 40th out of 44 courses last year with a 54% fairway hit rate. On the other side of the coin, distance ranked fourth in terms of average drive, coming in at 306 yards per drive. One would think that would mean a bomb-and-gauge course, but Todd won the event last year and is the shortest player on tour.
  • Approach to the Green: Exactly two-thirds of the greens were hit in regulation here, ranking it 24th last year.
  • Around the Green: The green complexes must be on the easier side since if a player missed them last year, they were able to get up and down 61% of the time.
  • On the Green: It is not really too much of a surprise to see greens being on the tricker side the first time most golfers played the course, as it ranked 30th out of 45 last year. With the winning score of -24, they can’t be overly difficult.

Designer

  • Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Fantasy Golf & PGA DFS Sweatsheet

This seaside layout boasts one of the easiest golf holes on the PGA Tour, at least by DraftKings scoring. It accounted for 17% of the total scoring. There were 25 eagles and over 240 birdies, almost three times as many birdies as pars. The two other par 5’s account for 20% total of the scoring, with 37% coming from just these three holes.

Player Preview

Only one golfer that competed in last week’s Zozo Championship will be here this week: Defending champion Brendon Todd. However, the highlight of the field is current Korn Ferry Tour member and very soon to be PGA Tour member Will Zalatoris, who needs nothing more than a made cut to earn special temporary membership. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see him as the odds favorite and one of the highest priced on DraftKings when salaries are released tomorrow. * He ended up second right behind Todd.

Others in consideration for that honor will be Doc Redman and Henrik Stenson. However, outside of those three, one of the biggest names in the field is Rasmus Hojgaard, the teenage stud from Denmark who has been tearing up the European PGA Tour since the restart. As of writing this, FanDuel has omitted him from their player pool. Justin Suh is in the field by virtue of his top 10 at the Shriners a few weeks ago and will certainly be in play again this week.

Statistical Comparison for PGA DFS Picks

Driving Accuracy vs. Driving Distance

With driving accuracy down so much, it’s not a surprise to see players like Brian Gay, David Hearn and Ryan Armour up pretty close to the top of the leaderboard. But bombers like Aaron Wise and Wes Roach were in the mix as well, so there’s no one distinct way to get it done.
