The First Cut: Northern Trust PGA DFS Picks & Preview for DraftKings & FanDuel Fantasy Golf Lineups

The Wyndham Championship shook up the PGA DFS leaderboards and was a thrilling finish to the regular season. The lure of playoff golf may not be what it is for other sports, but it is a great system to crown a season-long winner. It starts this week with 125 golfers competing at the Northern Trust. The top 70 will make it to the no-cut BMW Championship, where only the top 30 will move on to the Tour Championship. Most of the world’s best have qualified, and the best field since the British Open awaits. However, we have the Northern Trust to dig into, and after looking at some initial DFS golf projections, the research process begins for making DraftKings and FanDuel PGA DFS picks this week.

The Northern Trust PGA DFS Preview and Picks

Hosting the 2013 and 2019 versions of this event, Liberty National Golf Course has seen its fair share of top-level play. This tournament is going to be seesawed around many other locations over the coming years. With only three playoff events and no more WGC FedEx St. Jude, this event, by in large, will be going away next year, as the FedEx Championship will take its place as the first leg of the playoffs.

Liberty National Golf Club Previews

Liberty National is par 71 that measures just shy of 7,400 yards and sits just across the bay from New York City. It has a rolling links-style layout that provides a proper test for the golfers. At its length for a par 71, the course does not play easy — the winning score was -16 two years ago, won by Patrick Reed.

Statistical Comparison for Picks

  • Off the Tee: The 2019 showing of the event had golfers hitting 68% of the fairways while averaging 290 off the tee. On the accuracy side, it ranked 10th easiest on tour, while the distance number falls about in line with an average tour course.
  • Approach to the Green: The greens are small and hard to hit, coming in just north of 61%. That is a low number given how easy the fairways are to hit.
  • Around the Green: It does not get any easier around the green, as golfers only got up and down 61% of the time.
  • On the Green: Once on the greens, though, it finally gets easier; greens here were top 10 easiest to putt on during the 2019 playing of the event.

The three par 5’s at Liberty National surrender about 40% of the total scoring. It also has a drivable par 4 on the way in, which plays a tad easier than the eighth hole, the longest of the par 5’s. The course also ends with one of the hardest holes on the course, which could have a big impact late Sunday afternoon.

The Northern Trust PGA DFS Player Preview

Looking at the leaderboard from 2019, one would think that bombers would have littered the leaderboard, given a drivable par 4 and longer par 5’s. But it was quite the opposite, as the harder-to-hit greens made scrambling a large component that week. Anytime that becomes a pivotal stat, expect to see Reed near the top of the leaderboard just as he was in 2019. PGA Tour rules prevent Will Zalatoris from making the playoffs, even though he is currently ranked inside the top 30 and would make for a great course fit this week.

Here is a look at the leaderboard, the top 10 from the event and their strokes gained.

The Northern Trust Strokes Gained Review

When Reed gets his short game going and his ball striking is on, he is a tough matchup on any course — especially one that does not require a ton of distance off the tee. Adam Scott won the event that was played here back in 2013 and backed that up with another good performance in 2019, gaining strokes through his bag. Jordan Spieth also loved these greens, somehow winding up in the top five, even though that was during his downfall. If he putts like that again this week, he will win. A lot of good putters found their way into the top 10 here in 2019, including Andrew Putnam, Brandt Snedeker, Justin Rose and Kevin Kisner.
