Yahoo Cup PGA DFS Picks: Waste Management Phoenix Open

Looking for a way to learn PGA DFS without jumping in with both feet? Then I have a perfect solution for you. This year Yahoo and Yahoo Fantasy is offering a $10,000 Freeroll called the “Yahoo Cup.” This contest awards a winner for weekly events and one winner at the end of the season who has the most cumulative points. That winner will receive $1,000. While we may have missed four weeks of competition, not to worry; as part of the Yahoo Cup rules, you get to drop your lowest eight scores. That will come in handy as we start our track to become the Yahoo Cup Champion.

Given the fact that we are starting a tad behind the rest of the bunch, there are two schools of thought on how to make up those differences. Of course, ultimately it comes down to picking the right golfers. So, first I’ll start off with some general slate strategy, my top three value plays based on the Yahoo salaries, a couple of lineup fill-ins, and then I will finish it off with two different lineup build variations on how to start your building your lines this week.

General Slate Strategy for the Yahoo Cup

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is a tournament that always brings great drama and world-class fields. This year five of the top 10 in the world are here to compete, and outside of Rory McIlroy, who will be making his first start here in the desert, all of them have played well at this tournament recently. Picking the right combination of two of these golfers — mixed in with four others — will likely be the path to success this week given the tournament’s history. That should be the focus when building lineups: Trying to get at least two of the top five studs in your lineup.

Top Three Values for the Waste Management Phoenix Open

Will Zalatoris ($32)

One of the most exciting and intriguing young players, Zalatoris may not be a household name yet, but he will be soon enough. At $32, he’s well below the average salary per golfer and should allow plenty of flexibility to get in at least two studs to pair him with.

Luke List ($20)

List has shown he likes this time of the year, with-top 10s throughout the entire month of February. Whether it’s because of course fit or his training habits this time of year, early-season tournaments work for him. At the min salary this week, List gives you exactly what you need to pick and choose anyone you’d like for your lineup. Awesemo has List as his second best value play in  this week

Sam Ryder ($20)

Ryder is also coming in at min salary, and he has come on strong the last couple of weeks. To my surprise, Ryder has one of the best percentages of gaining at least 1 stroke with his approach shots against the field. This simply means that he has been very good with his irons lately. If that’s any indication of what can transpire this week, Ryder at min salary should be in deep consideration for your lineup.

PGA DFS Yahoo Cup Lineup Fill-Ins

  • Scottie Scheffler ($39)
  • Chris Kirk ($26)
  • Henrik Norlander ($23)
  • Sam Burns ($23)

PGA DFS Yahoo Cup Lineup Builds

Aggressive Build

If you want to roster all of my top three values this week, it certainly provides you the ability to get any two studs in you’d like. With $128 left to spend, adding in two of Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele will still leave you around $40 left to spend. That allows you to get players like Scheffler.

Conservative Build

If you aren’t keen on rostering both List and Ryder, I’d recommend going the balanced approach and adding someone in the Zalatoris range like Brian Harman. That should leave around 120 to spend on three players, plenty to go in and get at least one of Rahm, Thomas, Simpson, McIlroy and Schauffele.
