Veteran free agent quarterback Cam Newton is being linked to the New Orleans Saints after it was announced that Jameis Winston is out for the year

While Cam Newton remains sitting at home waiting for a phone call from an NFL team, the Saints suffered a blow on Sunday, losing starting quarterback Jameis Winston to a torn ACL.

Despite the fact that third-stringer Trevor Siemian came in to lead the Saints to a thrilling upset win over Tom Brady and the Bucs, many were still gauging potential options for New Orleans given the current status of their quarterback room.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio posed the question of the Saints signing Cam Newton, but also spoke on the potential ramifications of the move.

“With Winston done for the year, one of the key prerequisites to Newton getting an opportunity has been met. He won’t be a No. 2 option; the far better fit for Newton will be as a replacement for an injured starter. Obviously, however, the Saints would have to want Newton instead of the proverbial (or actual) next man up.

The Saints have Taysom Hill, who has missed multiple games with a concussion. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Hill is expected to return to action next weekend, against the Falcons. They also have Trevor Siemian, who played well enough to beat Tom Brady today (I wonder if Brady shook his hand after the game) and Ian Book. Ultimately, we’ll find out what Payton thinks of Newton, based on whether Payton does or doesn’t pursue Newton. And Payton surely has some thoughts about Newton, given that he spent 2011 through 2019 with one of the Saints’ division rivals,” Florio wrote.

Florio wasn’t the only person who openly posed the Cam Newton question following the Jameis Winston injury.

According to some reports, Sean Payton will not pursue Cam Newton to fill the void left by Jameis Winston. Which might lead people to wonder if he’ll ever play a snap in the NFL again.

All around the league, teams have been dealing with injuries to their quarterbacks. And at this time, interest in Newton is minimal, at best.

If Cam Newton wants to make a comeback, he might have to swallow his pride and agree to be a backup somewhere next season.
