Conor McGregor’s Coach Admits Ankle Injury Prior To Fight

Conor McGregor went down in the highly-anticipated trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 on Saturday night. But it was a flukey type of ankle injury that ended up being the nail in the coffin for “The Notorious.”

While Conor McGregor has vowed he’ll be back from this injury, he also may have an excuse for why his ankle gave in against Dustin Poirier.

During a recent interview with Laura Sanko, McGregor’s coach coach John Kavanaugh revealed that Conor suffered an ankle injury while training for Dustin Poirier. While Kavanaugh didn’t exactly use it as an excuse, he also didn’t rule out the possibility that the prior injury was a factor in McGregor snapping his ankle.

“Little bit of that ankle injury had been aggravated during the camp,” Kavanaugh said. “We’d gotten a scan on it. Did that have a small part to play in weakening it? I don’t know…

“They say, you think when you look at an MRI or a CAT scan, it’s perfect. But they say it’s like listening to an engine. A very skilled mechanic can maybe pick up something off it, but it’s not till you open it up that you see it. There might’ve been something in there. It would seem unusual that a young, healthy, fit man could wrap his foot around an elbow without there have been something there before. But you can sort of play those guessing games all day long.”

While we might not truly know if Conor McGregor was actually hindered prior to his loss to Dustin Poirier, he will likely get another shot at revenge.

Dana White said after the bout that a Poirier-McGregor 4 was likely, due to the fact that way the fight ended rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Conor McGregor is done just yet. But he’s going to need a healthy recovery from the brutal injury at UFC 264 before a much-needed win in his next fight.
