The NFL is still negotiating with players over safety protocols to get the season off the ground on time and things have started to look more promising in recent days. With those agreements closer to in place, the NFL can now start to move forward with its usual run of events. And with the opening of training camp comes the other key signifier that football is about to be back in a big way: HBO’s Hard Knocks is back on Aug. 11th with their reality show offering, this year starring the Chargers and Rams.

It’s good to see that the Chargers helmet is displayed in its natural Los Angeles habit, completely unsurrounded by fans:
And that’s the one thing that struck me as a little weird during the trailer: There seems to be no acknowledgement of what’s going on in 2020. These guys have done Zoom preparations, they’ve been quarantined, they’ve trained in some unconventional spots. It’s an incredibly unique situation that we’ve all experienced this year but it’ll be the most singular to see how NFL players deal with this new situation. And yet the trailer is there looking exactly like any other year with guys in pads and the familiar music. I don’t know if it’s reassuring or cognitively dissonant, but I’d lean a little more towards the latter personally.
Either way, no matter how good or bad the Chargers and Rams are, I’m sure Hard Knocks will deceive us all into thinking they’re better than they are. A tradition like no other.
