Iowa Head Coach Fran McCaffery Lashes Out At Reporter During Postgame Press Conference After Losing To Indiana

Iowa men’s basketball head coach Fran McCaffery is known for being a fiery guy. He’s often tough on refs, and wears his emotions on his sleeve. Today, a reporter was the subject of one of Fran’s tangents.

The issue started with a question about Iowa’s Naismith candidate Luka Garza. Garza got into foul trouble early, and sat for the final 12:30 of the first half. This led to Indiana making a charge, and the Hoosiers would hold on to beat the Hawkeyes 67-65.

When a reporter asked why Fran McCaffery didn’t send his star player back onto the court in the first half, he lost his cool.

“You guys are unbelievable, you want me to play the bench,” McCaffery said. “I play the bench because guys are in foul trouble, then you want me to take them out. How are they going to get better/improve?

McCaffery ended the rant by saying, ““That’s a ridiculous question Mark. You should know better.”

After starting the season looking like a favorite to win the National Championship, Iowa has stumbled as of late. Fran McCaffery’s Hawkeyes have now lost four of their past five games, and will likely fall far in the rankings.

Iowa is now 13-6 overall on the year. Fran McCaffery is going to have to find a way to right the ship somehow. He certainly has the talent to pull off a string of wins.
