Kentucky Derby Winner Medina Spirit Tests Positive For Corticosteroid Betamethasone

The Kentucky Derby winning horse Medina Spirit tested positive for corticosteroid Betamethasone. The tests after the Derby take a week to process. The owner, trainer, and jockey will be forced to return all of their prize winnings if their appeal fails.

So what does this mean for bettors? Are there going to be any reversals? At this point, it seems as though nothing changes the “betting’ outcome. People are still able to claim their winnings from their Medina Spirit bets, but unfortunately casinos and bookies will not be paying out the second place horse Mandaloun even with the possible drug test.

One of the biggest bettors who had Mandaloun is urging other horse racing enthusiasts to stop betting on the sport for a little pay back.

Churchill Downs announced their statement on their website and Twitter PR.

If Medina Spirit is in fact disqualified, it will be just the second winning horse in the 148 year history to be disqualified on a failed drug test. Dancer’s Image was the first in 1968 and Forward Pass was awarded the win and money. Dancer’s Image bettors also still won.

I would not be a happy camper if I were a Mandaloun better upon hearing this information Imagine the amount of money that people are counting this morning after hearing this news? I wouldn’t be shocked if a group of bettors got together and tried to create a lawsuit. This is definitely not the last we will hear of this incident especially since Medina Spirit was scheduled to be racing next week at the Preakness.
