Lionel Messi Breaks Cristiano Ronaldo’s Social Media Record With Copa America Trophy Picture

Lionel Messi broke a record over the weekend, and it had nothing to do with his prowess on the pitch.

After leading Argentina to the Copa America title, Messi posted a photo on Instagram of him carrying the trophy. So far, the picture is close to exceeding 21 Million likes.

“What a beautiful madness!” he wrote. “This is unbelievable! Thank you, God! We are the champions!”

Lionel Messi’s photo with the Copa America Trophy set a new record for most liked Instagram sports photo of all-time, passing Cristiano Ronaldo’s photo tribute to Diego Maradona, which he shared after the legend’s passing.

That post garnered 19.8 million likes, per ESPN.

Copa America was the first major title Lionel Messi was able to win with Argentina, so it’s no surprise that fans were excited to see the potential GOAT’s reaction to the long-overdue accomplishment.

Throughout the Copa America tournament, Messi had four goals and five assist, including a huge penalty kick in the team’s 1-0 win over Columbia in the semifinals.

If you were wondering, the most liked photo ever was a picture of an egg with the caption, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”

At least Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were both able to eclipse Kylie Jenner. But I think it’s safe to say that the egg’s record is safe…for now.
