Lou Holtz Slams Brian Kelly After He Left Notre Dame For LSU

Lou Holtz isn’t holding back after Brian Kelly decided to leave Notre Dame prior to their bowl game to take over at LSU.

When speaking on Wednesday, Holtz sounded incredibly salty with Kelly and his decision to leave. And he made sure to take some unheralded shots at the new LSU head coach.

“He was there for 12 years. He did an excellent job,” Holtz said during an appearance on The Crowd’s Line. “But I cannot think of one marquee win he’s had over a top-10 team… Other than he beat Clemson when they had the second-string quarterback (2020). When Clemson played them again the same year with [Trevor] Lawrence, they dominated.

“He’s an excellent coach, you just don’t leave Notre Dame.”

Lou Holtz would go on to explain that the Fighting Irish job was bigger than money when speaking on Brian Kelly’s betrayal.

“The other thing that bothered me about him… He never talked about Notre Dame and what really made it great,” he said. “To be part of the university you have to talk about the Lady on the Dome, you’ve got to feel the spirit of Notre Dame, you just have to be a part of it.

“It’s something you feel awesome responsibility to the Notre Dame fans and to Notre Dame itself.”

All indications are that Notre Dame will now elevate defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to the head coaching position. And Lou Holtz will hope that Freeman does a better job lamenting the Fighting Irish “tradition” than Brian Kelly.

“The other thing that bothered me about him,” Holtz said referring to Kelly. “He never talked about Notre Dame and what really made it great,” he said. “To be part of Notre Dame you have to talk about the Lady on the Dome, you’ve got to feel the spirit of the Irish , you just have to be a part of it.

“It’s something you feel awesome responsibility to the Notre Dame fans and to Notre Dame itself.”

You gotta respect how much Lou Holtz’s love for Notre Dame can still be felt every time he talks of the university. Clearly, Brian Kelly never felt as passionately about the Irish.
