Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan didn't hold back when speaking about how soft the current team plays under first-year head coach Robert Saleh

Rex Ryan will probably be remembered fondly by New York Jets fans. But so far, it’s been quite the opposite for defensive-minded Robert Saleh during his first season at the helm.

On the year, the Jets defense has continued to get worse as the year has progressed. And after a blowout loss to the Bills on Sunday, Saleh’s Jets fell to 2-7 on the year, which is good for last place in the AFC East.

Following the game, Rex Ryan was asked about what he thinks about Robert Saleh. And the outspoken former coach didn’t hold back.

“This is a horrendous defense,” Rex Ryan, now an ESPN analyst, said on ESPN Radio’s “DiPietro & Rothenberg Show” Monday morning via Newsday. “This guy [Saleh] is supposed to be a defensive guru. I heard everything, and I take it personal on this one. Everything I heard was about, ‘Well, this guy is a lot like myself but without the bad part.’ Yeah? Well, some of the bad part you need, because this team doesn’t play with any damn heart. That’s the disappointing thing to me.”

Sure, the Jets offense was supposed to endure a lot of growing pains this season with rookie Zach Wilson under center. But fans were undoubtedly hoping to see a rejuvenated defense under Saleh. And so far, they haven’t seen any signs that this guy is a defensive guru whatsoever.

Rex Ryan might be a little brash, cocky, and it’s probably for the best that he’s no longer in the league. But he’s spot on here: the Robert Saleh tenure has gotten off to a rocky start. And there’s no other way to spin it at the moment.

Hang in there, Jets fans.
