Sean Payton Makes A Surprising Decision On Future Of Coaching Career

Late last week, a report started circulating that longtime New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was contemplating his future with the team.

Obviously, this news created a whole media firestorm. And Saints owner Gayle Benson added to the speculation on Monday when she announced that she really had no idea what Payton’s plans were going forward.

One day later, and it has been reported that Sean Payton has told the Saints that he’ll be “stepping away” — effective immediately.

While many teams were quick to punch on the idea of Sean Payton coming in to save their franchise, it has also been reported that the head coach plans on retiring altogether.

Sean Payton had a hell of a run with Drew Brees in New Orleans. But things were different in 2021.

After Brees retired, Payton was left with Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian to work with at QB. And for the first time in a while, they failed to make the postseason.

It’s hard to imagine that Sean Payton will hang it up at just 58 years old. He’s still one of the top offensive minds in the game, and I would be surprised if we don’t hear more rumors of him coming out of retirement in the coming years.
