The Baseball World Has Jokes After The Mets Tee’d Off On Matt Harvey In His Return To Citi Field

Matt Harvey looked like he was going to be a key cog in the New York Mets’ rotation for a long time to come. When Harvey was just 24-years-old, he went 9-5 with an absurd 2.27 ERA in 2013. He followed it up with a successful 2015 campaign (after missing 2014 with an injury), and the Mets rotation rode the club all the way to the world series.

And then everything fell apart for “The Dark Night”. After 2015, Harvey could never find his groove again, and his ERA has never been below 4.80 ever since. The Mets moved on from Harvey in 2018, and he has made stops with the Reds, Angels Royals, and now finds himself with the Orioles.

In the series between the O’s and Mets, Harvey returned to the mound at Citi Field for the first time since he left the team. In a classy move, the Mets faithful welcomed their former ace with a standing ovation.

Unfortunately for Harvey, the standing ovation was the best part of his afternoon. The big right-hander was roughed up to the tune of seven runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings pitched. Harvey would also take the loss in the game. After the outing, social media was blowing up with Matt Harvey’s performance at Citi Field.

After the game, Harvey spoke on his emotions pitching at the place where it all started for him.

“I didn’t really know what to expect, and what the fans gave me here was pretty incredible. I’m not going to lie. I was holding back tears… It was something I’ll never forget.”

While Matt Harvey’s career has been a bit of a disappointment, he’ll always have his early years with the Mets, and they’ll always have the memories he was able to provide over that short time.

It was nice to see the mutual respect between Harvey and the Mets faithful today. Now, we’ll see if “The Dark Knight” can find a way to rise again in his career.
