The NFL Wants The 49ers To Keep Their Pick At #3 A Secret For As Long As Possible To Increase TV Ratings

The NFL is worried that there might not be enough suspense at the top of the NFL Draft board this year.

Everyone knows that the Jaguars will select Trevor Lawrence, and the Jets are 99% likely to take Zach Wilson. With that being said, the NFL has reportedly called the 49ers to try to have them keep their pick at #3 secret up until Roger Goodell makes the announcement.

Per Pro Football Talk:

“Per a league source, the NFL is pressing the 49ers to keep their pick under wraps for as long as possible. The obvious goal is to maximize the TV ratings for the moment when the Commissioner announces San Francisco’s selection.”

So far, the Niners are doing a pretty good job of abiding by the NFL’s wish. It was reported that San Francisco was interested in Mac Jones with the #3 pick, but now it’s also being reported that they might also be interested in taking Trey Lance with the pick.

It was even revealed that the 49ers did not know who they were taking with their pick as of last weekend.

I think that’s a lie. There’s no way San Francisco traded up to the #3 pick without having a pretty clear idea of who they want to take to replace Jimmy Garoppolo. The 49ers have their guy, they just don’t want us to know who it is quite yet.
