EPL DFS Picks: Fantasy Soccer | Aug. 21
These are listed in order of the top plays, including median projection, floor and upside.
Ivan Toney (DraftKings: $6,500, FanDuel: $16)
Arsenal did a solid job of limiting Ivan Toney in his debut match. Crystal Palace is a step down in defense of 1.17 expected goals allowed at home to 1.38. Toney failed to get shots off in the opening match, but still sits at a 3.15 shots per match average with 43% on target accuracy. He averaged a goal in 70% of his starts for Brentford and handles the PKs. The ask is cheap when considering match up and volume upside. His lack of floor makes him a GPP option that allows spend up for set piece and at least one other goal hunter.
Andros Townsend (DraftKings: $7,800, FanDuel: $13)
Everton will have their work cut out for them against the non stop attack of Leeds United. This match plays as a DFS dream and ownership should not be as high as it should with Manchester City sitting as an option against Norwich City. Andros Townsend has adjusted well to his new team and he has an upgrade of goal finishers at the end of his deliveries.
He is not the sole set man for Everton, with Lucas Digne sitting on the other end of the pitch. Townsend’s open play crossing volume is hard to ignore and his ask sits low enough for the floor to pay it off. He averaged 2.63 created chances and 5.72 crosses per match a season ago with Crystal Palace. His first outing with Everton saw an uptick in both categories against Southampton side. Leeds is a massive upgrade form Southampton but not on the defensive front. They are constantly paying the price on defense and Townsend and the Everton attack can take advantage.
The attack of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison are a tempting pair. They average similar shot volume form a season ago, with Richarlison holding leverage on more drawn fouls and Calvert-Lewin postings a more accurate on target percentage. The floor of Calvert-Lewin makes him more appealing on FanDuel while the drawn fouls and higher ask makes Richarlison a leverage play on DraftKings. Richarlison would look to take PKs should it come down to it with Gylfi Sigurdsson questionable to play.
Patrick Bamford (DraftKings: $5,900, FanDuel: $18)
We already bashed on the Leeds defense. Their offense deserves praise as they are a shot and created chance volume machine. They likely cannot keep Everton off the score sheet so they will look to match goal for goal. Patrick Bamford is way too cheap on the ask for his goal scoring upside. He led the hosts in scoring a season ago by two times the closest teammate in Stuart Dallas.
Bamford contributed on 40% of Leeds overall scoring and averaged 3.10 shots per match. His on target accuracy of 42% makes him an upside option on both DraftKings and FanDuel. When looking at a choice of Toney or Bamford, Toney has the far better match up but Bamford’s asking price seems like an error to exploit. In GPP’s an option is to roster both and slot in a midfielder or two from the heavy favorite Manchester City or one of the Everton attack.
The set piece man is Raphina for Leeds. His asking price is rising, and will garner ownership as deserved. I would look to save on the ask and take a few more shares of Jack Harrison. Harrison provides the open play volume of 1.49 shots and 3.77 open play crosses per match. Both to me are GPP consideration only.
Danny Ings (DraftKings: $7,a00, FanDuel: $20)
Aston Villa has a plus match up against a Newcastle side that cannot stop conceding goals. They allowed the fifth most expected goals in the EPL a season ago on the road at 1.60. Aston Villa will look to bounce back from a defeat in their first outing and Danny Ings could benefit form a start of Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins to spread the wings and offer created chances. Ings comes in as a GPP play with preference to the two strikers above with lower asking prices. His ownership will provide leverage.
Manchester City will garner all the ownership, so you won’t need much Ings. I would stay away form Ings if I cannot get Bailey or Watkins in the lineup, because El Ghazi shoots first limiting his offerings up front. Bailey and Watkins complement Ings better to help him run his impressive average of 2.28 shots and 43% on target accuracy.
Other Options: Riyad Mahrez (DraftKings $8,800, FanDuel $22), Kevin De Bruyne (DraftKings $10,500, FanDuel $24), Callum Wilson (DraftKings $7,900, FanDuel $17), Ismalia Sarr (FanDuel $17), Emmanuel Dennis (FanDuel $16), Todd Cantwell (DraftKings $4,800, FanDuel $11), Solly March (FanDuel $8), Pascal Gross (FanDuel $14).
Sergi Canos (DraftKings: $7,000, FanDuel: $16)
Sergi Canos comes in with an elevated ask. He still offers value of 2x+ and will garner ownership in all formats. He handles the sets for Brentford and has a plus match up. Crystal Palace allowed 1.37 expected goals at home a season ago. They are likely to miss key pieces in the midfield with Eberechi Eze and Luka Milivojevic which hurts their possession. They were demolished by Chelsea. Chelsea is miles ahead of Brentford but Sergi Canos has the opportunity to uptick form his DFS output against an Arsenal side that did is a slightly better defense. Canos does not need to score to pay off this ask, but he does rank second on Brentford in scoring and evenly distributes goals and assists. His crossing volume and shot volume of 7.33 combined build a floor that translated well until he sees top six competition.
Other Options: Lucas Digne (DraftKings $6,100, FanDuel $13), Matthew Cash (DraftKings $5,100, FanDuel $13), Max Aarons (DraftKings $3,200, FanDuel $10).
Ederson (DraftKings: $5,900, FanDuel: $14)
David Raya (DraftKings: $4,700, FanDuel: $10)
