EPL DFS Picks: Fantasy Soccer | Aug. 13
These are listed in order of the top plays, including median projection, floor and upside.
EPL DFS Picks: Captain
Nicolas Pepe (DraftKings: $16,800, FanDuel: $13)
The EPL season kicks off with newly promoted Brentford taking on Arsenal. Arsenal comes in as a slight favorite in this matchup. Arsenal cannot afford to look past the newcomers, and with Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard out of the picture for this matchup, Nicolas Pepe will look to control the set shares. He builds a comfortable floor with indirect free kicks and open play volume. He can contribute on the offense by way of scoring and assists and contribute on 20.75% of the club’s overall goals a season ago. Pepe led the club in shot volume per match with 2.67 last season and finished third overall in volume while playing seven-plus matches less than Saka and Aubameyang. His on-target accuracy of 41% trailed only Alexandre Lacazette making his upside a bonus on both FanDuel and DraftKings. Pepe is the top option in cash formats.
Sergi Canos (DraftKings: $12,000, FanDuel: $8)
If one sits at the captain spot, it is a tough ask to fit the Arsenal front line attack. Brentford has the offensive firepower to make this an interesting match. With Matias Jensen ruled out, the set shares look to fall on Sergi Canos. Canos tallied the second-most goals for Brentford a season ago, only behind the massive output from Ivan Toney.
Canos will see a slight drop in his crossing volume due to control of possession by Arsenal but still brings an average of 3.52 plus the vacated 4.67 of Jensen by way of set and open play. He averaged 3.2 shots per match and 1.41 drawn fouls. Canos’ asking price allows the room to place the Arsenal attack in the flex with a mix of two of their front three plus Ivan Toney. In cash, the Arsenal attack is the common build but Toney replacing one for GPP is a way to differentiate.
Other Options: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (DraftKings $15,900, FanDuel $14), Alexandre Lacazette (DraftKings $14,700, FanDuel $15)
EPL DFS Picks: Flex
Ivan Toney (DraftKings: $7,200, FanDuel: $13)
Toney is the leading goal hunter for the Brentford side. He posted 31 goals a season ago. Now, this way in the English Championship so we expect a significant drop. Arsenal is dealing with injuries to Thomas Partey, who did well to control the defensive midfield. Brentford is at home and will be fired up to start the season. They will need to get on the sheet and fire chances away to compete, and Toney has the ability to find the back of the net. He averaged 3.15 shots per match a season ago with 43% on target accuracy. Toney comes in at a discount considering the upside and the PK sets. In cash, he is a concern considering the lack of a floor. In GPP, he is the scoring candidate with odds of both teams scoring sitting at around -134 and Brentford’s recent form producing goals.
Kieran Tierney (DraftKings: $6,400, FanDuel: $10)
Kieran Tierney could go overlooked in the shuffle of offense from both sides. He is a prime contributor to Arsenal’s success and pushes up the wing to deliver crossing volume by way of the open play. He averaged 4.62 crosses per match a season ago and does well on both sides of the pitch with 1.92 won tackles and interceptions to complement the 2.72 chances created. Rostering him at the captain spot could open up a wave of goal hunters in the flex along with the set-piece men from each side. On FanDuel, Cedric Soares in the back is a nice min salary option considering the task of helping on clears to a Gabriel less backline.
Other Options: Bryan Mbeumo (DraftKings $6,800, FanDuel $9), Frank Onyeka (DraftKings $6,000, FanDuel $5)
