DraftKings & FanDuel UCL DFS Picks Today
Alvaro Morata (DraftKings: $8,700, FanDuel: $22)
Juventus has an easy first matchup to start the group stage. Malmo is struggling in a lower tier Allsvenskan League, allowing 1.22 goals per match. At home, Malmo’s defense is worse than on the road and ranks seventh in total goals allowed in the Allsvenskan. Malmo commits 12.5 fouls per match and allow 3.06 shots on target per match. These metrics are going to get blown up by Juventus, who, in a top-tier Serie A, averages four shots on target and draw 11 fouls per match.
Without Cristiano Ronaldo, Federico Chiesa and Federico Bernardeschi, room is opened up to fit the Juventus stars. Alvaro Morata averages 2.38 shots per match and will have opportunities to add to that total with time of possession being lopsided in this matchup. He contributed on 26% of Juventus’ overall scoring a season ago and has an on-target rate of 46%.
Paulo Dybala can be paired with Morata. He has a share of indirect sets on his side of the field and averages 4.92 chances created a season ago. The winger also averages 2.38 drawn fouls per match, ranking second behind Juan Cuadrado. Cuadrado is the other pairing given drawn fouls and set piece shares. Despite the split shares, both Dybala and Cuadrado make sense as a pair given the possession, compliments between both crossing and created scoring chances. Both are in play in cash and GPP.
Roman Yaremchuk (DraftKings: $6,800, FanDuel: $19)
Darwin Nunez (DraftKings: $6,300, FanDuel: $15)
Benfica visits Dynamo Kyiv as a slight favorite. Neither club here should garner ownership given one of the lowest expected goals totals on the slate. Benfica is on a role in Portugal of two-plus goals in four straight matches. Dynamo has enjoyed the same success in Ukraine. In their previous two meetings Dynamo took one match 1-0 after Benfica dropped them 2-0. Dynamo is allowing 5.25 shots per match in Ukraine. They face a step up in Benfica who grace Portugal with 15.2 shots per match and hit target 6.2 times. Benfica should do enough to see out a narrow victory here.
Roman Yaremchuk looks to get the start in this matchup. He is the goal hunting option and faces the top club from his national squad. He averages 2.5 shots per match with an on-target rate of 50%. The price offers salary relief and Yaremchuk averaged 0.64 goals per match over the past two seasons with Gent.
Pizzi looks to handle the set shares for Benfica. His price is not as favorable in the $8,000 range and $17 range. He makes sense in GPP if maxing given sets but in cash, there are better core plays. For a pairing, Alejandro Grimaldo makes sense at the defender. He is active on the open play with crossing volume and over a shot per match. He adds to his metrics with 1.3 drawn fouls per match and 1.3 won tackles and interceptions. Should he get the start Darwin Nunez looks to be one of the best value plays. He averages 3.75 shots per match and has scored a goal in each start for Benfica in their young season. Nunez draws fouls in bunches and sits under $6,500. His on-target accuracy of over 40% across three seasons make him a solid option on FanDuel at $15.
Maximilian Arnold (DraftKings: $7,100, FanDuel: $13)
Wout Weghorst (DraftKings: $7,200, FanDuel: $19)
A lot of attention will go to the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Romelu Lukaku and Memphis Depay. We need a way to fit those goal hunters without pure punts. Of those Chelsea is miles ahead in terms of matchup with Barcelona falling behind Bayern Munich in odds, depth and talent.
Wolfsburg is in a matchup with realistic chances of upsetting the Ligue 1 champions. Lille has looked bad on defense and conceded a number of chances to mid-tier sides of France. Wolfsburg is riding three clean sheets in their last four matches. It is not realistic to think they shutout a potent offense in Lille, but the focus is the Bundesliga side’s offense.
Maximilian Arnold will handle the set shares for the visitors. He averages north of five crosses per match and created around three scoring chances. Shot volume is not his forte but he can add value with consecutive years of three plus won tackles and interceptions per match. His versatility on both sides of the pitch allows him to produce in DFS despite a split in time of possession. He is a GPP option, and his price is slightly too high for the floor needed in cash.
Wout Weghorst handles the PKs for the visitors and has been a reliable scorer. He has averaged a goal every two matches in four consecutive seasons and sits north of 2.5 shots per match in that stretch. His on-target accuracy sits around 50% and given the woes on Lille’s defense, the opportunities will be there.
Duvan Zapata (DraftKings: $7,700, FanDuel: $18)
Villareal have seen their tight defense struggle to start the season, with 1.33 expected goals. They allow 2.33 shots on target a game, which is second best in La Liga but might not be enough against Atalanta. The Serie A club averages 3.33 shots on target and a volume output of 13.7 per match.
Duvan Zapata has already posted a goal in his only start for the visitors. He has averaged 0.51, 0.71 and 0.81 goals per match in his previous three seasons. The Colombian averages 3.63 shots per match and his always a brace threat. He provides virtually no floors and even four shots will not get the job done should he fail to convert. He is a GPP option with a matchup against Villareal, who have started slow.
On the other side of the pitch is Gerard Moreno. At a similar price point, Moreno handles the PKs and has the home-field advantage to help the defending Europa League champions stay the course.
Other Options: Memphis Depay (DraftKings $9,900, FanDuel $21), Robert Lewandowski (DraftKings $10,200, FanDuel $22), Kai Havertz (DraftKings $7,600, FanDuel $20), Joshua Kimmich (DraftKings $7,500, FanDuel $16), Romelu Lukaku (DraftKings $10,500, FanDuel $23). Weston McKennie (DraftKings $5,000, FanDuel $15).
Douglas Santos (DraftKings: $4,100, FanDuel: $11)
Cuadrado and Grimaldo are the top options at the defender spot as mentioned above. Douglas Santos comes in at an interesting spot. Chelsea is going to presumably run over Zenit. He averages north of six crosses a match, which is hard to hit without possession but provides metrics of a floor. He also averages north of three won tackles and interceptions and will get opportunity to increase the metric. His salary is low enough given his expected floor without goal contribution upside.
Other Options: Robin Gosens (DraftKings $5,100, FanDuel $12), Kevin Mbabu (DraftKings $4,900), Tomas Kedziora (DraftKings $3,600, FanDuel $10).
Odysseas Vlachodimos (DraftKings: $5,300, FanDuel: $12)
Koen Casteels (DraftKings: $4,600, FanDuel: $9)
