Tennis DFS Picks: Novak Djokovic and Fabio Fognini, DraftKings, FanDuel, January 25 (FREE)

Should you bet Djokovic at Wimbledon? Caleb has the answer in his Wimbledon Preview, giving out his favorite tennis bets in each quarter.

We’re into the fourth round of this week’s major, and only the best of the best remain. The sixth slate of this tennis DFS week has eight matches with ATP and WTA players in action. We have thoughts on Novak Djokovic and Fabio Fognini, so let’s dive in.

Novak Djokovic (DraftKings $11,000; FanDuel $26)

Novak Djokovic has played some excellent tennis this week, and we’ve seen why he’s the best player on the planet. He is currently riding a 12-match winning streak, including wins over Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal. Novak has broken his opponent’s serve 10 times in the last two matches, while facing just one break point. He’s winning 90% of first serve points, and at this rate they just need to hand him the title. He is a massive -135 favorite to win this tournament, and I think he will take it down if he avoids his kryptonite Stan Wawrinka.

Djokovic has a fourth-round matchup against Diego Schwartzman, the ATP No. 14 from Argentina. Schwartzman has been rock solid, winning all nine sets so far in this tournament. However, he is winning only 70% of his first serve points, and that is what Djokovic feeds off of. Novak is the best serve returner in the history of the game, and I think Diego is going to have a tough time keeping up. This will be their second meeting on a hard court, with Novak winning the first one in straight sets.

Fabio Fognini (DraftKings $8,200; FanDuel $16)

Fabio Fognini has played a ton of tennis this week, but he continues to prove everyone wrong. Fognini is arguably one of the most erratic players on the tour, but when he’s on his game it is hard to stop. He’s winning 76% of first serve points this week while breaking his opponent’s serve 14 times. While Fabio was only 14-13 on the hard courts last year, once he gets deep into a tournament he keeps the jets on and tries to the best of his ability.

Fognini is up against Tennys Sandgren, the ATP No. 100 from the U.S. Similar to Fognini, Sandgren can be rather erratic and act like he just doesn’t care at times. Tennys is 10-15 in his last 25 hard court matches, but he has been spectacular this week. He took down the No. 8 seed Matteo Berrettini in five sets, and then backed that up with a straight set win over Sam Querrey. The downside though is that his serve has not been great, and he’s been quite lucky to make it this far. He’s faced 25 break points in his last two matches, losing just five of them. I’m rolling with the more consistent out of the two, and picking Fognini to move on.

Sofia Kenin (DraftKings $8,000; FanDuel $16)

Sofia Kenin was arguably one of the best hard court players in the 2019 season with a 38-16 record on the year. She took down titles in Hobart and Guangzhou and she was an alternate at the WTA Finals. Kenin is 5-2 so far in 2020 and she’s been red hot to start the week. She’s serving aces at a 7% rate while winning 70% of first serve points, but the rallies and her baseline game is what wins her matches. I think she’s going to wear her opponent down today, while being a popular tennis DFS play.

Kenin has a fourth-round meeting with Cori Gauff, the WTA No. 67 from the U.S. Gauff is the new kid on the block in the tennis world, and she is gradually working her way up the ranks. However, the line on this match is a bit crazy. Gauff did just take down Naomi Osaka, but Osaka had 30+ unforced errors and it was arguably her worst match in the last year. Cori is 3-3 against top 50 players, but I think Kenin will make her work the hardest. She doesn’t make a lot of errors and loves to let the opponent make the first mistake, and I think that’ll get to Gauff in the end.

Possible upset/value plays: Maria Sakkari (DraftKings $5,600; FanDuel $11)

Maria Sakkari has played some lights out tennis so far in 2020, with a 4-2 record to start the year. She took down the WTA No. 11 Madison Keys in her last match, converting on four break points against the big serving American. Sakkari is hitting the ball with a massive amount of force right now, and it’ll be tough for someone to stop her. She’s winning 76% of first serve points this week, and I hope that momentum carries over into this match.

Sakkari is facing off against Petra Kvitova, the WTA No. 7. Kvitova has been unstoppable this week, winning all six sets similar to Sakkari. Kvitova is coming off a blowout win over Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 6-2, winning 85% of first serve points. Petra is always a threat to take down any tournament she plays in, and I’m sure she wants to avenge last year’s title loss in Melbourne. However, Sakkari does own the 2-1 head to head advantage in this matchup, including a hard court win in August.
