Tennis DFS Picks: Qiang Wang and Donna Vekic, DraftKings, September 16 (FREE)

It’s a new week of tennis, and some of the top players on the WTA side will be in action today. The second slate of this tennis DFS week has 26 matches with WTA players in action. We’ve got thoughts on Qiang Wang and Donna Vekic, so let’s dive in.

Qiang Wang (DraftKings $9,600; FanDuel N/A)

Qiang Wang has been one of the most consistent hard court players over the last 12 months with a 33-13 record. She reached three finals during that span, while taking a title home in this same tournament. The 2018 champ is 14-8 against top-50 players over the last year, and it will take a very talented player to take her down. Wang’s last match was in the quarterfinals at the US Open, where Serena Williams gave her a clinic in under 45 minutes. I would not look too much into it, as Serena played out of her mind in that match.

Wang has a first round meeting with Shuai Peng, the WTA world number-109 from China. Peng has been solid on the hard courts in 2019 with an 8-6 record. She made a semifinals run last week in Nanchang before falling short to Elena Rybakina in three sets. Peng won just 57% of service points and got broken 11 times during her last three matches, and that level of play will not be good enough against Wang. She’s 0-2 against top-50 players in 2019, and I don’t see her getting that first win today.

Donna Vekic (DraftKings $9,300; FanDuel N/A)

Donna Vekic plays her best tennis on the hard surfaces, and that can be seen in her 24-11 2019 record. She made a deep run at the US Open, making it to the quarterfinals but fell short to Belinda Bencic 7-6 6-3. Vekic is 12-5 against top-50 players on the hard courts this year, which shows that she can compete with the games best players. She’s reached four semifinals over the last 12 months on this surface, and I think she has another one in her this week.

Vekic will go up against Caroline Garcia, the WTA world number 30 from France. The hard courts have not been kind to Garcia recently, as she is just 1-4 over her last five matches. Her most recent match last week against Kristina Mladenovic was a poor performance to say the least. Garcia faced 17 break points while winning just 48% of service points in a straight set loss. She is not in her best form right now, and against an in-form Donna Vekic, this could get ugly for Caroline.

Karolina Muchova (DraftKings $8,900; FanDuel N/A)

Karolina Muchova picked up right where she left off after his quarterfinal run at Wimbledon, with a 4-2 record on the hard courts. Her lone two losses came against Serena Williams and an in-form Magda Linette, so not too much to be ashamed of there. Muchova is 18-7 on the hard courts over the last 12 months, but just 2-5 against top-50 players. Her game has increased drastically over the last few months, so I think that record will slowly get into the positive.

Muchova will face off against Alison Van Uytvanck, the WTA world number 62 from Belgium. Van Uytvanck hasn’t been great on the hard courts in 2019, with an 11-11 record on the surface. She did manage to win a tournament in Budapest in February, but outside of that five-game span, she has not been good. Van Uytvanck is just 1-6 against top-50 players on hard courts this year. In her last two matches, both against players ranked outside the top 100, were not impressive as she lost eight service games in total. If Muchova can get her game going, she can end this match in straight sets at a relatively cheap tennis DFS price.

Possible upset/value plays: Priscilla Hon (DraftKings $6,700; FanDuel N/A)

Priscilla Hon is going to be one of the game’s best players sooner or later, as she has the power to outhit anyone on the tour. Hon is just 15-13 on hard courts in 2019, but she has elevated her game in these last two weeks. She is 3-1 in her last four matches, with the one loss coming against Su Wei Hsieh in a three-set marathon match. Hon ran through the qualifiers this week while not losing a set, and the hope is the momentum carries into her next match.

Hon will go up against Mihaela Buzarnescu, the WTA world number 101 from Romania. Buzarnescu has not been good on the hard courts over the last 12 months, with a 6-19 record including a 10-match loss streak. She had a solid week last week in Hiroshima by making it to the semifinals, but I’m not sold on her game yet. Buzarnescu lost 12 service games over her last three matches while winning just 51% of all service points. Hon has a dangerous return when she is on a roll, and I think it’ll show in this match.
