Serve & Volley: DraftKings Tennis DFS Picks for 2021 Mercedes Cup | 6/9

DraftKings Tennis DFS picks for 2021 Mercedes Cup today Wednesday June 9 with Alexei Popyrin based on expert projections

As the French Open comes to a close so does the clay swing for both the ATP and WTA for the most part. We now move to the 2021 Mercedes Cup, which is played on grass. This surface plays far different with more speed and less bounce to the ball but more skid. Not many players have any experience on grass over the last year with COVID wreaking its havoc so form may be of the utmost importance. With many of the world’s best still competing or now recovering, the fields aren’t the strongest, but still carry plenty of tennis DFS “playability.” As we could have expected, DraftKings has downsized the offerings a bit but after a few days with the bare minimum, or nothing, having 13 matches to pick from is substantial enough along with $5,000. Let’s find some winning tennis DFS picks for our daily fantasy lineups on Wednesday, June 9.

DraftKings Tennis DFS Picks for 2021 Mercedes Cup | June 9

Alexei Popyrin ($7,900)

Opponent: Feliciano Lopez

Odds: -118

As mentioned previously, playing on grass courts is no simple task with its requirement of speed and spin, which should lean far in the favor of Australia’s Alexei Popyrin. Even though Popyrin is extremely green on grass with just nine career matches (6-3 record) it suits his style far better than that of the aging Feliciano Lopez. The 22-year-old Popyrin is extremely mobile, relying much on his athleticism to win him points still at this point in his career, while Lopez often leans on his service game — which can be good — and veteran savvy to outplay his opponents.

The form really isn’t there for either in the very recent but 2021 has been the best year of Popyrin’s young career going 19-10, including a title in Singapore indoors — which may be the closest comp to grass. The mindset of these matches will be large, as the vets also may just be looking to get in some time on the grass surface in preparation for Wimbledon. Regardless of the scenario and Lopez’s history here, Popyrin’s game is on the rise and should translate well to a surface relying on ability to track balls down. As the winner of the match, per Awesemo’s tennis DFS projections, he makes for a fantastic value at $7,900 for Mercedes Cup lineups.

Alison Riske ($8,000)

Opponent: Xiyu Wang

Odds: -132

Alison Riske is the odds-on favorite to win the title in Nottingham, per Elo predictions, which bears plenty to the overall talent in this tournament. That said, we don’t have to worry about all of her opponents, we just have to focus on Xiyu Wang, who, like Riske, has had a tough 2021 with just eight wins in 20 matches. Much like the first match, there is a giant gap in the experience on grass with Riske enjoying her time far more with a win percentage north of 70% in 110 matches, while the 20-year-old Wang has just seven matches total with her best win coming against Misaki Doi.

I’m siding with the betting markets and the history of success the American has had here, reaching a semifinal and a final her last time here in 2017. On smaller slates, hammering the mid-tier is the easiest way to get different and open up lines to more overall win probability. I’ll take plenty of chances on an 84% implied winner, per the Elo, all day long at just $8,000 on DraftKings.

Upset Picks: Peter Gojowczyk, James Duckworth

DFS has been a big part of my life since 2016 and has changed my career path and quality of life so much I can't not love it. I enjoy all sports and I'm definitely not a diehard Packers fan, or any team for that matter besides maybe the Wild. Love to travel with the wife and kid - Germany if I'm picking a favorite place. Hope to help people make more thoughtful, and informed, DFS decisions.
