After a week’s hiatus tennis dfs is are back on DraftKings with a 17 match slate with 15 of those being of the WTA influence. This often makes for wide open slates because the WTA is always a rollercoaster of highs and lows but add to the fact that the 79th-ranked player in the world is the most expensive and you’ve got yourself an absolute dandy of a slate. Thankfully there are plenty of nice prize pools across the board so let’s make some picks for our lineups and win some money.
DraftKings Fantasy Tennis DFS Picks Today
Low-Owned Tennis Pick Today: Claire Liu ($7,900)
Opponent: Heather Watson
Heather Watson is a recognizable name in the tennis world yet these days but 21-year-old Claire Liu absolutely is not (yet). The young American is a slight favorite in her home country which may not be incredibly important but will bring some backing from the crowd the the well-known Englishwoman often would get. Liu has been far from dominant in 2022 winning just two of her five WTA matches but has look improved from last year in the early going with a higher domination rating and reduction in double faults over 1% overall. The experienced Watson has looked even less impressive than Liu going just 4-6 in 10 matches with zero sweeps or fantasy scores above 65 points.
Players in this price range and leverage don’t often go hand-in-hand but facing Watson will automatically affect the total ownership seen on Liu and with their games going in the opposite directions at this point in their careers there is some nice upside too for Liu here in gpp’s.
Fade Pick: Rebecca Peterson ($10,800)
Opponent: Maria Fernando Herazo Gonzalez
This might be one of the easiest fade picks in the history of these articles as Rebecca Peterson faces the very much unknown Maria Gonzalez in her home country of Colombia. Peterson has fared okay overall in her career on the red dirt at all levels but in WTA events she’s been absolutely handled winning just 33% of such matches with extremely poor service games. On top of that, this is her first match in 2022 on the surface which automatically brings concern to the ceiling which at her slate-pacing tag is never ideal for tennis dfs where many players can 10-12x.
Peterson is a giant favorite, and should still win this match, as Gonzalez has just two career wins all-time on the WTA level. With her price and lack of time on the surface thus far it is plenty reasonable to expect some rust and maybe even some struggling which is just not swallowable in tennis dfs.
Top Tennis Pick Today: Shuai Zhang ($9,500)
Opponent: Francesca Di Lorenzo
This pick speaks to the volatility of this slate as Shuai Zhang is rarely a touted player with her extremely defensive style but even at $9500 she offers up a lot of safety the other players up top do not. The crafty veteran has looked solid as usual in 2022 winning 9 of 16 matches thus far while also posting 65 or more tennis dfs points in five of those wins with three over 70. Zhang plays an extremely defensive style which frustrates opponents to no end most times and leads to her breaking them down mentally as well as physically. Her biggest asset on a slate such as this one may also be her self-discipline in the service game where she double faults just 3.5% of the time. In comparison to others in her range she is multiple percentage points below all and gives credence to the fact that she is averaging more fantasy points per match than all but two priced above her – Amanda Anisimova and Jasmine Paolini both of whom will be heavily owned just based on name recognition and odds.
Zhang should have zero issues handling the Italian who has won just 50% of her matches on the ITF tour and hasn’t played a match at the highest level at all yet this season. With a reasonable price tag and floor she’s play built for all formats in tennis dfs.
