DraftKings and FanDuel Spotlight Pitchers, Wednesday 6/27

Jake Hari

FanDuel DFS MLB picks like Kyle Gibson for September 19 MLB DFS based on projections and ownership from the number 1 DFS player.

The following Spotlight Pitchers were selected by writer Jake Hari. For more analysis on the slate, check out Awesemo’s Rankings and Ownership Projections.

Kyle Gibson ($8,500 DK/$8,300 FD)

Gibson has had 3 straight starts with low swinging-strike rates of 6.8%, 6.8%, and 8.6%, but those were in tough matchups against the Angels, Indians, and Red Sox. It was encouraging to see him survive those starts, going 7, 7, and 6 innings in them, and I think Gibson is better than most people giving him credit for. On the year, he has an 11% swinging-strike rate, and he’s shown he can strikeout righties or lefties at above-average rates. He has the best slider in terms of Whiffs/Swing% (56.5%) of any pitcher in the MLB, and that pitch should do wonders tonight if he’s got it working. To top it off, Gibson has a solid matchup on the road against the White Sox, who are striking out at a 25% rate against righties on the year, so at this mid-tier price, he certainly has some upside for GPPs.

Shane Bieber ($8,400 DK/$7,400 FD)

Some of Bieber’s numbers in his last start versus the Tigers were phenomenal, as he racked up 9 strikeouts in 7 innings with no earned runs. Even more impressive, though, was his 18.6% Swinging-Strike rate he posted with a 34.7% O-Swing rate with only a 40% first-pitch strikes. In his short sample, he’s mowing down righties, striking them out at a 34.5% clip with a 1.14 xFIP and 63.2% ground ball rate. He won’t sustain that kind of dominance, but another solid start is in order against a righty-heavy Cardinals lineup that strikes out over 23% of the time versus RHP and according to their wRC+ (95), they are below-average against righties all-around. Bieber won’t go unowned, but we’ve seen his upside, and this is the type of lineup he could dominant for 6-7 innings.

Madison Bumgarner ($11,200 DK/$9,800 FD)

Bumgarner had a great outing his last time out against the Padres, striking out 8 in 8 innings, and now becomes the highest-priced pitcher on the slate on DraftKings. I will admit I’m worried about the lack of Swinging-Strikes he’s had, but there are few options at the top-tier, and Bumgarner seems somewhat safe tonight. While he doesn’t have the strikeout upside that someone like Robbie Ray does, he will not have a pitch count unlike Ray, who is not fully stretched out. It will be important to pay attention to Bumgarner’s ownership because it could get out of hand with the lack of options, but there’s no doubt the strikeout matchup is neutral, and the park is excellent for MadBum tonight.
