DraftKings and FanDuel Spotlight Pitchers, Thursday 7/12

MLB Twitter has erupted after it was reported that the San Diego Padres were acquiring Nationals ace Max Scherzer in a blockbuster deal

The following Spotlight Pitchers were selected by Awesemo.com writer Jake Hari. For more analysis on the slate, check out Awesemo’s Rankings and Ownership Projections.

Max Scherzer ($13,300 DK/$12,000 FD)

Scherzer is the best pitcher on a slate that doesn’t lack depth, but he won’t be tough to fit in with some of the viable punts in the low-tier. The Mets ran out a Triple-A lineup yesterday, and if they do that again today, double-digit strikeouts is more than in play. Even if they roll out a regular lineup, the Mets have a 22.7% K-rate against righties over the last month and it looks like he could see up to 5 right-handed bats, who he strikes out nearly 40% of the time on the season. If you can afford him, Scherzer is the best option on the slate.

Blake Snell ($11,700 DK/$10,500 FD)

Snell is coming off 3 straight fantastic outings, going at least 7 innings and 9 strikeouts in all of them while allowing 1 total earned run against the Nationals, Astros, and Mets. The Twins are a sneaky-good matchup for lefties, as they rank 4th in K-rate against LHP on the season, while posting a bottom-5 ISO (.123) and wRC+ (84) against them. Snell may go somewhat overlooked tonight because of the immense talent at pitcher that we have, but he’s my 2nd-favorite behind Scherzer, and he’s been doing this while struggling to get ahead early, posting First-Pitch Strike rates of 56%, 50%, and 46.4% in his last 3 outings. If he can get ahead of the Twins righties, he should have no problem with the rest of the lineup, as he’s elite against lefty bats.

Kyle Gibson ($6,700 DK/$8,600 FD)

I’ll be rooting for a pitching duel in Minnesota, as Gibson is currently my favorite low-priced SP2 tonight against a lack-luster Rays team that will feature a majority of righties. Gibson’s slider has been nasty this year, as it ranks 2nd behind only Patrick Corbin’s with a 54.7% Whiffs/Swing rate. After a hiccup in the first inning against the Orioles in his last start, Gibson was dominant, posting his 3rd straight game with at least a 33% O-Swing rate and 12.4% Swinging-Strike rate, as he had a season-high 19.3% Swinging-Strike rate. Give me Gibson in this tier at somewhat low ownership, as many will be scared off because of the favorable hitting weather in Minneapolis tonight.
