MLB odds: Examining the best MLB picks to win the 2020 AL Cy Young Award. Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander, Zack Greinke, Shane Bieber.

The following Spotlight Pitchers were selected by Awesemo.com writer Jake Hari. For more analysis on the slate, check out Awesemo’s Rankings and Ownership Projections.

Justin Verlander ($12,400 DK/$11,800 FD)

Verlander gets a tough strikeout matchup against the Mariners (20% K-rate vs. RHP), but he’s been able to overcome similar matchups against the Angels (11Ks) and Dodgers (14Ks) recently, so I’m putting my trust in him as the top option once again tonight. He’s fanning 37% of lefties on the year and over 30% of righties, and there are some strikeouts near the bottom of this order with Healy, Zunino, and Maybin. This may not be the best spot you could ask for, but Verlander is able to go as deep as any pitcher on the slate and his opposing team total is near 3.0, making him a very safe option with upside.

J.A. Happ ($9,300 DK/$8,400 FD)

Happ will make his 2nd start with the Yankees tonight against a lineup that has a lot of swing and miss in it. On the year, the Rangers have a 23.2% K-rates against lefties in total which rises to 25.9% (highest in MLB) when they go on the road versus a lefty. There is certainly some power on the Rangers’ side, but Happ has done an excellent job at limiting hard-contact all year, allowing under 30% with a 15.9% Line Drive rate. With (hopefully) some run support behind him, Happ should be able to get ahead of the Rangers and record strikeouts while going deep into this game.

Andrew Suarez ($5,100 DK/$7,300 FD)

Suarez isn’t someone I usually find myself playing much, but on a slate with some big bats to pay up for, the price (on DK), park, and matchup are simply too good to ignore. The Pirates currently have a 3.8 run total and are an average at best team against lefties on the year, and they, too, struggle outside of their home park. Suarez’s ground ball rate and WHIP are lower in AT&T, while his K% increases at home as well. He’s also shown the ability to throw 90+ pitches, which is valuable on this slate as it gives him a nice floor at his bargain price. Suarez is likely to be one of the highest-owned pitchers on the slate, but he becomes a tough fade because he unlocks so many of the best bats tonight.
