Main Slate

Washington Nationals – 5.4 implied runs

The Nationals are loaded with batters that are above average against southpaws.  LHP Martin Perez was amazing to start the year, regressed and has sort of reached equilibrium.  Over his last ten starts he has averaged 5.2 innings with a 5.64 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and a hefty 13 home runs.  Over his last 808 lefty/righty matchups he has allowed a .367 wOBA, .186 ISO and a hefty 10.5 BB%.

We can look to Brian Dozier who is very familiar with the hitting conditions in Minnesota as a discounted option.  Anthony Rendon should be the cornerstone for any Washington stack.  Howie Kendrick and Ryan Zimmerman should both be in the lineup and they have underrated power.  Lastly, whomever is behind the plate in Yan Gomes or Kurt Suzuki is another upside play.

Evening Slate

Of course you can roll with the Coors Field Extravaganza, but where is the fun in me talking about that?!

Tampa Bay Rays at RHP Ariel Jurado – 5.3 implied runs

Regardless of an “opener” being used, we want to target against RHP Ariel Jurado.  While since the beginning of last season he has not allowed a lot of power, he does not strike out many hitters. Jurado is relatively splits-neutral with a .355 wOBA, .195 ISO and 13.3 K% since the beginning of last season.

Once again it should be in the low-90s in Arlington and gap-power plays well there.  Look to Austin Meadows, Ji-Man Choi, Tommy Pham and Travis d’Arnaud as your core four on all slates.

Late Slate

Pittsburgh Pirates at RHP Logan Webb – 4.0 implied runs

There is not much on the late slate to look at as the games are in three favorable parks with decent pitchers.  RHP Logan Webb has 320.1 innings in the minors, but only one appearance at AAA.  As expected, he was a little better against same-handed hitters.  Additionally, he did not allow an excess of power, but this was in the low-minors.

Fortunately, we know that the Pirates production will likely be consolidated in a specific core of players.  Since the beginning of last season Josh Bell, Jose Osuna and Bryan Reynolds all top .205 ISO against righties.  Colin Moran and Adam Frazier are also worthy of consideration.  On the full-slate these batters can be sprinkled in and they are best as duos or trios on the night slate.
