After a week of smashing each and every fantasy baseball slate, Sunday was finally the day Blue Jays and Astros found a way to fail. In fact, it was Gerrit Cole of all players that got shelled, leading to the Red Sox stack plus Shohei Ohtani one-offs winning the day. Cole wasn’t even mediocre but legitimately terrible, which should only fuel the fire of the debate as to how the sticky substance ban is going to change perception of certain pitchers. Still, after Clayton Kershaw‘s 13-strikeout display in the final game of the evening, there should still be some optimism that not all is lost when it comes to targeting the top-end studs. And there are more than a couple to choose from for tonight’s nine-game slate, so let’s start sifting through the MLB DFS picks and getting to some of the options for our MLB DFS lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel that stick out the most (no pun intended).

Three Pitching Studs, Then A Cliff
Monday’s selection of arms is exactly as this heading suggests: Trevor Bauer, Freddy Peralta and Lucas Giolito are in a class of their own, as the three simultaneously sport the only double-digit K/9 rates among all qualifying pitchers on this slate, as well as the three best WHIPs. On FanDuel, it’s certainly the safe route to rotate these three on the top end and call it a day:
It will be very interesting to see where ownership breaks down among this trio, as Bauer’s exorbitant price tag isn’t too cost prohibitive so long as the top of the Astros lineup is not getting jammed in. It is all too easy to say, “play the lowest-owned of the three,” but that’s most likely the direction gamers should take. And take note of the NewzGod’s updates on the @AwesemoMLB Twitter handle with the weather in Chicago, as the Twins – White Sox game has some definite potential rain issues to navigate for Giolito.

But on DraftKings, buckle up. Unless one finds ways to fit two of the three $10,000-plus aces into the same lineup together, the decisions at SP2 are uncomfortable to say the absolute least:
Kyle Hendricks has been living on a prayer this season. His 3.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP look alright, but his .287 xBA and .501 xSLG suggests that darker times are on the horizon. While it should help to get Kolton Wong‘s lefty bat out of the leadoff spot in that Brewers lineup (he’s doubtful to play), he’s still such an unappealing strikeout pitcher with just a 19.1% strikeout rate on the season. The same is true with Zack Greinke and his 17.9% strikeout rate, although he gets the Orioles matchup bump, a team markedly better against lefties than righties. Still, at $9,000-plus, they are both overpays.
That is why this is terrifying to say, but the two potential SP2 options that stick out writing this the night before are facing one another in the Tigers – Indians game. Eli Morgan and Matt Manning are both just a few starts into their big league careers, but Morgan has flashed strikeout upside (27.8% strikeout rate in three games despite getting lit up in each), while Manning has been efficient (3.38 ERA with at least five innings pitched in each of his first two starts). Manning is most likely the priority for less, as his 10.02 K/9 in seven Triple-A starts this season suggest he will have more than the four total strikeouts he’s had through two MLB starts. Make sure to check out the Top Pitchers tool to see if there’s leverage to be had going with one over the other, but it’s terrifying to think these two are actually in play on this slate.

- There seems to be some decent hitting weather around the league tonight, with every city besides Milwaukee (dome) and Chicago (rain) looking to be 80 degrees or more with favorable wind directions. So considering all of the ownership one would expect to be going the Astros’ way, there should be a number of viable teams to pivot to.
- Shohei Ohtani is going to be ungodly owned on DraftKings tonight. He went from being $5,700 and the top scoring hitter on Sunday despite playing in Tropicana Field to an inexplicable tag of $5,000 against a bad righty in Yankees Stadium. He is the first batter in for cash games there, and it’s not remotely close.
- Just play Kyle Schwarber.
