Lineup Rewind: NBA DraftKings Main Slate GPP Review | 12/28/20

Yesterday, 12/28, we had a five-game NBA DFS slate, and the main DraftKings GPP was the NBA $700K Monday Shootaround ($150,000 to first). There were 54,901 entries at $15 each; 3,011 of the 18,051 entrants (17%) made a profit. Let’s dive into the NBA DraftKings Lineup Review and take a look.

DFS Rewind: NBA DraftKings Lineup Review | 12/28

Last night featured lots of value plays due to star players resting, especially for the Brooklyn Nets. Caris LeVert was 75.6% owned and rewarded players who used him with 60.5 fantasy points for $6,600 (9.2x). The key to the 12/28 slate was also to roster Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, who put up 37 fantasy points at $3,100 (11.9x) for the 19.5% of entrants who rostered him. One entry placed fourth without Luwawu-Cabarrot, finishing 3.5 points behind the winning lineup thanks to low-owned Mike Conley:

The Winner

Congratulations to ymmotrinh and lenny6695, who entered the same lineup, scoring a 380.75 and besting all other entries by 1 point. Ymmotrinh entered four lineups, while lenny6694 did it with a single bullet. They used all $50,000 team salary and a cumulative team ownership that ended up being 273.5% in what became an increasingly chalky slate as the day’s news came in.

Salary and Ownership

Thanks to all the value available, we saw a slight drop in percentage of lineups using the maximum or close to the maximum salaries. Nine of the top 50 finishers used $49,600 team salary or less, including the 27th-ranked entry, which used $49,300. All others used $49,700 or more. Here are the top salaries used in the GPP:

  • $50,000 | 39%
  • $49,900 | 22%
  • $49,800 | 16%
  • $49,700 | 9%
  • $49,600 | 5%

Cumulative team ownership on the top 50 was concentrated in the 270-304% range, which is incredibly high. I guarantee that will not be the case tonight with a 10-game slate. As you can imagine, this GPP featured more duplicates than normal as well.

The 150-Maxers

There were 92 150-maxers, making up 25% of the field. Twelve of the 92 (13%) made a profit, while six cashed 10 or fewer entries. All told, 150-maxers took fourth and seventh place. I expected a better showing from the 150-maxers in this slate for sure. It looks like more lineups cashed than normal, but maybe due to the duplication on the leaderboard, the 150-maxers overall profit took a hit. The most profitable one was youracnecream, who cashed 81 entries, including one that popped for 377.25 and took fourth place:

Miscellaneous

The boom of the slate goes to the aforementioned Luwawu-Cabarrot with 11.9x. The bust of the slate is an easy call, as Ja Morant left his game early with an injury after putting up 12 fantasy points for $8,300 (1.4x) at 29.8% ownership.

One hundred forty-four lineups were reserved and not played. The lowest-owned lineup that cashed (min-cashed) featured a cumulative team ownership of 76.6%:

The lowest salary team that cashed used $46,900 team salary and finished in 483rd place for a $60 profit:

The best single bullet (one entry in an MME GPP) besides lenny6695, who was a co-winner, goes to 33BigCat33, who turned $15 into $25,000 with this lineup:

The most popular lineup played was used 267 times and min-cashed. It had 330.1% cumulative team ownership.

The best possible lineup you could have played last night scored a 396.25 using a team salary of only $48,700 and cumulative team ownership of 196.7%. When will a DraftKings NBA GPP winner play the nuts? It was not last night, as the optimal lineup would have won the GPP by 16.5 points:
