Lineup Rewind: NBA DraftKings 12/23 Main-Slate GPP Review

NBA DFS is back! I started writing NBA GPP recaps on Twitter in 2019, focusing on how the 150-maxers fared and that will still be the focus of these articles. That, along with interesting and relevant information gleaned from Lineup Study, a tool you can use if you upgrade your subscription to include Fantasy Cruncher Pro. So we’ll be doing a DraftKings NBA lineup review for the Wednesday December 23 slate

Welcome to a review of last night’s 13-game slate on Day 2 of the NBA season. This article will always focus on the “main” Draftkings GPP from Wednesday December 23, in this case, the 78,431 entry NBA $1M Fadeaway Special ($200K to 1st).

NBA DraftKings Lineup Review | Wednesday December 23

The Winner

Congratulations to fvacc23, who entered eight lineups, cashing three, and turning $120 in entry fees into $199,980. His best lineup posted a 388.25, winning this GPP by 4.5 points — his second-best scored 73.75 points lower. The first thing that jumps out to me is the low cumulative team ownership of 57.5%. There were many low-owned lineups in the Top 50, which is to be expected in the first massive slate of the year. This lineup used all $50,000 team salary and had some correlation, stacking two Bucks with a Celtic and two Hornets with a Cav, along with one player from each side in the Memphis vs. San Antonio game. On a 13 game slate, the winning lineup featured players from just three different games.

Salary and Ownership:

Only six of the Top-50 finishers used $49,700 team salary or less. Here are the top salaries used in the GPP:

  • $50,000 | 48%
  • $49,900 | 24%
  • $49,800 | 12%
  • $49,700 | 6%

As mentioned, cumulative team ownership was lower and more erratic than normal. The Top-10 featured lineups as low as 40% and as high as 172%. The most money was made by lineups around the 60% mark. I expect these numbers to change quite a bit and be an outlier after another week or two of smaller slates. Thirteen games is just massive.

The 150-Maxers

We had 111 150-maxers, making up 21% of the field. Fourteen made money, including a third-place finish from the most profitable MME player in this GPP, alexman93.

Only seven 150-maxers made more than $1,000, while 68 150-maxers lost more than $1,000. Many well-known names did very poorly last night in this GPP. Two 150-maxers entered 150 lineup trains and they both min-cashed, doubling their money. Excluding those two, player pool size for the winners ranged from 34 to 86 players.

Miscellaneous

The boom of the slate goes to Josh Jackson, who put up 32 DK points for $3,000 (10.7x) at 1.4% ownership. The bust of the slate goes to 24% owned Wendell Carter Jr., who scored 15 DK points for $4,400 (3.4x).

One-hundred-ninety lineups were reserved and not played. The lowest-owned lineup that cashed (min-cahsed) featured a  cumulative team ownership of just 17.4%.

The lowest salary team that cashed (min-cash) used $46,600 team salary.

The best single bullet (one entry in an MME GPP) last night goes to flytown6365, who turned $15 in $100,000 with this lineup:

The best possible lineup you could have played last night scored a 433.25 using a team salary of $49,800. It would have won the GPP by 45 points.

There were 29,071 entrants in this tournament last night, 4,463 profited (15.3%). If you were not part of the 15%, better luck on Christmas Day, which is our next slate — a five-gamer. A $25, 117,600-entry GPP featuring $1 million to first and a total prize pool of $2.5M. Min-cash will be 1.6x, 40% goes to first place and 50.6% will go to the Top-10 finishers.
