NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks, Tuesday, April 6th

Yahoo Play of the Day — Thaddeus Young: Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 34.3 | DraftKings: 33.99
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 41.6% | FanDuel 23.6% | DraftKings 22.6%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $20 | FanDuel $6,500 | DraftKings $6,000

Daniel Theis has been serving as the direct backup to Thaddeus Young since joining the Bulls. He is away from the team tonight, which should mean a few more minutes for Young. The $20 salary on Yahoo feels like a steal, Young has evolved into a consistent, all-around contributor this season for Chicago. He should see at least 30 minutes, as the only other viable frontcourt option off the bench is Lauri Markkanen. The safety provided by Young makes him a tremendous NBA DFS pick on Yahoo today.

Clint Capela: Atlanta Hawks vs. New Orleans Pelicans

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 40.42 | DraftKings: 40.58
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 15.8% | FanDuel 0.1% | DraftKings 8.4%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $40 | FanDuel $9,900 | DraftKings $8,600

John Collins and De’Andre Hunter are out tonight, which makes Clint Capela a very intriguing NBA DFS pick on Yahoo and DraftKings. Over on FanDuel his $9,900 salary is about 10 to 15% too high, so he is not an appealing option. Though he picked up a minor hand injury last game, Capela is expected to start tonight.

The absence of Collins leaves a void of 13 field-goal attempts, 18.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. In the three games where both Hunter and Collins were sidelined, Capela has been phenomenal. In these outings he is averaging 35 minutes, 22 points, 15 rebounds and 5.3 combined blocks/steals for 55 Yahoo fantasy points per game.

Pascal Siakam: Toronto Raptors vs. Washington Wizards

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 41.96 | DraftKings: 42.3
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 14.8% | FanDuel 14.4% | DraftKings 12.6%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $36 | FanDuel $8,700 | DraftKings $8,200

Once again Toronto will be without Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet and Rodney Hood, and this opens up the opportunities for Pascal Siakam. While tonight’s matchup is not as good as Monday’s when the Raptors stole a victory at the buzzer from the Wizards, the Lakers do not have much in the way of post defenders. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are still out, though even with Andre Drummond expected to return, he is not much of a defender. Siakam should be in the mix for 40-ish fantasy points tonight, and 50-plus is within the range of reasonable outcomes.

Good Value

Ivica Zubac: Los Angeles Clippers vs. Portland Trail Blazers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 29.07 | DraftKings: 29.13
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 8.4% | FanDuel 9.6% | DraftKings 17.2%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $20 | FanDuel $5,400 | DraftKings $5,400

Jusuf Nurkic will not be playing tonight, so that means Enes Kanter will be playing the bulk of the minutes at center for the Blazers. Savvy NBA DFS gamers are well aware that he is one of the worst post defenders in the league and that Ivica Zubac makes for a nice play, particularly on DraftKings with two center slots. On FanDuel, while there are several interesting options, no particular player currently stands out among Nikola Vucevic, Nikola Jokic, Bam Adebayo and Jonas Valanciunas, which makes Zubac a solid option, as there is not a lot of opportunity cost associated with rostering him.

Risky Value

Bogdan Bogdanovic: Atlanta Hawks vs. New Orleans Pelicans

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 29.08 | DraftKings: 30.08
  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 12% | FanDuel 0.6% | DraftKings 16.4%
  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $24 | FanDuel $7,200 | DraftKings $6,200

For his second straight game, Bogdan Bogdanovic is the risky play of the day. The $7,200 salary on FanDuel is keeping the masses at bay, but he is picking up some traction at $6,200 on DraftKings. While John Collins and De’Andre Hunter are still out, that does not do a lot to bolster the opportunities for Bogdanovic. In the three games prior to Sunday’s poor fantasy outing, Bogdanovic had 17, 17 and 18 field-goal attempts. These represent his three highest totals this season, and one of those games also went to overtime. In these games he knocked down 55.7% of his field-goal attempts, including 14 of 24 from behind the arc for a 58.3% success rate. This is simply not sustainable.

Awesemo Boom/Bust tool shows there is a 9.8% chance of Bogdanovic being in the DraftKings optimal lineup tonight. When compared with his popularity, that gives him a -6.5 leverage score. There is just an 8.9% chance of him he exceeding his boom score (5x salary + 10) of 41.0 DraftKings points. However, there is a 54% chance of him failing to surpass his bust score threshold (5x salary) of 31.0 DraftKings points. Let other gamers assume the risk of a poor performance tonight.

Final Thoughts on the Tuesday, April 6th NBA DFS Slate

Tonight there is a more typical staggered schedule with games tipping off during a three-hour window. Keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
