January 20 NBA DFS Pick: Hassan Whiteside
Now, Awesemo sets his sights on today’s NBA slate, with some seriously good matchups on several daily fantasy sites.
NBA DFS Pick: Hassan Whiteside ($7,500 DraftKings, $9,000 FanDuel) Grades: A, A; Values: A, A
Few offseason moves have been a boon to both their team and NBA DFS players like Hassan Whiteside to Portland. Whiteside has the fourth-most double-doubles in the NBA this year, averaging 15.5 and 14 while leading the league in blocks per game. He is coming off a somewhat lackluster six points and nine rebounds, but in the two games immediately prior, Whiteside posted back-to-back 18-18 games. He has hit that mark four times in the month of January alone. Offensively, Whiteside is mostly a rim runner as evidenced by his 20.2 usage rate. However, he gets a lot of putback chances with the third-most offensive rebounds in the league this year. Simply put, Whiteside is one of the preeminent paint threats in the league.

He is essentially mispriced on DraftKings, as he is projected for the fourth-highest fantasy output among center-eligible players tonight, yet is almost $2,000 less than every player ahead of him, and some players below him. And it is not as if the matchup against Golden State should negatively impact Whiteside’s value; the Warriors are mediocre defensively and are slightly above the median in pace. In fact, Whiteside’s matchup should be ideal as no one on the Warriors can hope to compete with the big man on the boards. Whiteside trails only Andre Drummond in rebound percentage while Golden State has the fifth-worst rebound rate in the league.
Whiteside is near-lock territory with his double-double upside on both sites, but DraftKings is where he really stands out. Obviously, this means his ownership is going to be through the roof — currently projected at well over 50 percent by Awesemo. Still, it’s not without reason. Whiteside’s price and production make him a great place to start your builds while maintaining flexibility elsewhere.
