It’s here! The NHL season starts tonight, and I’m sure everyone including myself couldn’t be more pumped. It was a pretty busy offseason for teams, as a lot of moves have been made and a lot of rosters have been shaken up. Steve (Homercles) and Jake will be breaking down the slate with their live shows and the goal of this article is to bring you guys some GPP plays that can complement your lineups to help take down the larger field tourneys.
When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great place to get up to the minute news and information, is the teams beat writers. I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and also naturalstattrick.com.

Full Schedule for Wednesday October 3rd, 2018
|AWAY||HOME||TIME – EST|
|Anaheim||San Jose||10:30 PM|
Prices are in Draftkings format unless notated.
As of this article, William Nylander has not signed with the Leaf’s so I’m assuming that Tyler Ennis ($4,000) will play on the second line with Austin Matthews and Patrick Marleau.
Toronto Maple Leaf’s vs Montreal Canadiens
This game appears to be an extremely lopsided game and should be the highest owned of the night. Unless you have been living under a rock, the Maple Leaf’s have added mega stud John Tavares, and the Leaf’s now have one of the most potent offenses in the league. The top line of Tavares & Marner will be MEGA chalk, but for the right reason. The Kadri line plays the shut-down role at home so that means the Tavares line and the Matthews line will get the matchup benefits. If you want to get a little differentiation you can stack Matthews with Tavares and Marner but it’s going to cost you $20,400. Morgan Riley ($5,800) mans the point on the top power play unit and he should also be a popular play.
I’m not looking to much here tonight, but I can tell you that Jesper Kotkaniemi ($2,500) is literally min price and makes for a great dart play tonight. He will draw in for the second power play unit and he is also playing alongside Jonathan Drouin. He doesn’t need to do much to pay that small price tag off. The Center spot comes at a prime value tonight so it depends on your lineup construction if you can fit all three centers.
Washington Capitals vs Boston Bruins
The major news is that Tom Wilson will be suspended and Brett Connoly ($3,500) will slide in on the top line alongside Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Kuznetsov. Connoly makes for an ok addition to the top line stack to help save you some salary. The Caps 2nd line will most likely hard match with the top line of the Bruins so I would stick to the Ovie line if you did go here. You should be able to get them at a lower ownership due to the short slate with the two popular teams and the “Hangover” bias.
On the Boston side of things, Matt Grzelcyk ($3,300) appears to slot into the top power play and gets you some cheap exposure to Pasta – Bergeron – Marchand.
Calgary Flames vs Vancouver Canucks
Johnny Gaudreau – Sean Monahan – Elias Lindholm
Mathew Tkachuck – Mikael Backlund
Vancouver has lost the Sedin sisters to retirement and now have a bunch of young talent that needs to grow. They are with the Habs for the worst team on this slate and I’ll be looking to attack them tonight. Looking at prices, this Calgary top line as a whole looks to be underpriced and should carry decent value tonight with the mega chalk Leaf’s and Sharks on the slate. You can add Mark Giordano in with them to fully correlate on the power play, or you can get more differentiation by playing the second line of Backlund – Tkachuck. Vancouver will do whatever they can to keep the Horvat line away from the Backlund line, as they play as a great shut down line.
I’m not really searching anyone out on the Canucks side of things but I’m sure I’ll have some exposure to a line or two in the massive GPP on DK. Elias Petterson ($4,700) looks to make his debut on the second line and he will also play on the top power play. you could make a case for a last man in for him, but the Canucks side looks grim.
Anaheim Ducks VS San Jose Sharks
The Ducks start the year riddled with injuries and look to have a tough matchup tonight. The Sharks make for a solid play tonight but they will be popular as well. Stacking Timo Meier – Joe Pavelski with one of the elite defensemen like Brent Burns or Erik Karlsson could pay dividends. Meier looks to have a break out year on the top line of the sharks after Evander Kane has been moved to the third line. Although the Ducks had a good kill last year, they gave up a TON of penalties. The power play for the Sharks is absolutely ridiculous and it will be interesting to see how things shake out on the extra man advantage.
Anaheim still has some firepower on their top line with Ryan Getzlaf centering Rikard Rakell and Troy Terry (as Corey Perry is sidelined). You could also go super contrarian with Adam Henrique and Jakob Silfverberg as they play on the second line and the top power play unit together. The Ducks have a pretty solid blueline with Cam Fowler quarterbacking the top power play, but it looks like Brandon Montour would be the value option.
Frederik Anderson – TOR vs MON – $8,400
Anderson makes for the chalk play of the night and has the massive Vegas odds advantage so he would be more of a cash consideration for me.
Mike Smith – CGY @ VAN – $7,500
Smith is a bit of a basket case but if he’s on he is great. The only worry here is pace of play. But, without the Sedin’s playing, the Canucks should take a good step forward and there should be plenty of rubber to stop. Smith will be in a lot of my lines tonight. Smith also saves you some salary from the top netminders for your tournament teams.
