NHL DFS PICKS: Power Plays for DraftKings & FanDuel, 3-5-20

We have a nice 10 gamer tonight with a bunch of road favorites.  A couple teams are playing on the hind end of a back to back as well.  Make sure you keep an eye on news and our live blog, because teams usually won’t have a morning skate if they played the night before, and news is always important for NHL DFS. In today’s Power Plays article, I will be breaking down the slate and give you some of my top picks at each position, including Leon Draisaitl and Alex Ovechkin, as well as some of my favorite line stacks.

BOLD* – Back to Back

^ = 3rd game in 6 nights

NHL DFS Picks: Centers

Leon Draisaitl (EDM @ CHI) – DraftKings, $7,800; FanDuel, $$8,700 (W)

Vegas thinks this game will have a ton of action tonight, and I find myself agreeing with them. Leon Draisaitl has been a man on a mission over the last ten games. The pivot has 18 points, while averaging four shots on net. Going to the second line of the Oiler’s give you more consistency, as they will correlate the most. Last game, Draisaitl – RNH – Yamamoto lead the team with 23% of five on five ice time. If you’re thinking about the Oiler’s top line, just know that Tyler Ennis only played nine minutes last game, which I don’t think will happen again, but is a tad concerning for stacks. I like the Draisaitl match-up more, You can always look into playing a power play stack with Connor McDavid, As long you like a cheap line to go along with them.

over the last ten games, The Blackhawks are still giving up the most shots against, the most high danger chances against and they have the worst expected goals against at five on five. I foresee the Hawks deploying the Jonathan Toews line against the Oilers second line, which is a plus match-up for Leon and the crew.

Charlie Coyle (BOS @ FLA) – DraftKings, $3,400; FanDuel, $5,200

Boston’s top line is a great play tonight, I will surely have exposure.  You can get some cheap exposure to the Bruins top line with Charlie Coyle because he’s playing the net front role, on the top power play. Over the last three games, Coyle played a minimum of 18 minutes. He’s playing on the third line so its not really an even strength stack situation, but adding him into a Bruins power play can get you some separation and lower the salary of the stack.

You can also take a look at Dylan Strome ($3,500) who is now pivoting a line with Patrick Kane. With a small sample together the duo is creating over 40 shots per 60 with an expected goals of 3.17 XG/60. Last game they connected for five goals.

NHL DFS PICKS: WINGERS

Alex Ovechkin (WSH @ NYR) – DraftKings, $7,800; FanDuel, $8,800

The Great eight was held off the score sheet last night, and he should have something to say about it tonight. He’s a nightly contender for the shot bonus and he should have a good shot to get there again tonight. In the two meetings this year, Ovechkin has nine shots on goal registered with just one point. The Rangers have played a tad better recently, but they are still bottom five team in almost every metric we like to look at for NHL DFS.

The main target here is that the Ranger’s penalty kill has been brutal. Ovie loves his spot on the top of the circle on the power play and he will make them pay. The Rangers are giving up the most shots against on the PK and they have the worst expected goals against in the league. If recency bias plays into the Caps ownership, I’ll have exposure for sure.

Up top looking towards David Pastrnak ($8,100) or Patrick Kane ($7,600) makes a ton of sense as well.

Anders Lee (NYI @ OTT) – DraftKings, $6,000; FanDuel, $6,300

The battle of two “bad” teams, one has to come out on top. Anders Lee is an all around great player that likes to get physical and he has a good set of hands. He’s averaging almost four shots per game over the last ten games, and the Isles top line has good offensive numbers with full correlation, and that helps when the Senators have the 25th ranked penalty kill. Ottawa has the fourth worst team Corsi, and they are giving up the third most shots against per 60 at five on five. Both sides of this matchup are pretty interesting as the Isles have struggled on the defensive side themselves, but since moving Artem Anisimov to the top line, that line has hemorrhaged scoring chances.

Alexander Radulov (DAL @ NSH) – DraftKings, $4,200; FanDuel, $5,200

Radulov hasn’t been the offensive powerhouse were used to watching since he has been playing away from Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. But ha has found a spot on the Stars third line alongside Joe Pavelski. Both guys will correlate on the top power play and they get us a great power play matchup. The Predators have struggled mightily on the penalty kill this year. Nashville sports the third worst pk in the league with just a 75% kill rate. Adding in a blue line like John Klingberg as the quarterback could help get some lower owned correlation tonight with the other chalk spots.

One can also make a case for the Kings Adrien Kempe ($3,600). The Maple Leafs have a ton of offensive fire power, but they also give up a ton of scoring chances. This game should have great pace with chances on both sides. Kempe has averaged about three shots per game and he’s got a knack for the net. He’ll also play on the top power play, which is a plus with the Maple Leafs having the 26rh ranked penalty kill in the league.

NHL DFS PICKS: DEFENSEMEN

Darnell Nurse (EDM @ CHI) – DraftKings, $5,500; FanDuel, $4,000

Nurse’s price on FD doesn’t get any more appetizing. He’s averaging over 26 minutes of ice time per game, while getting you exposure to the lethal power play of the Oiler’s. With a floor of 5.5 shots / blocks over the last ten games, it’s a no brainer. The matchup is really nice as well. Chicago gives up a metric ton of shots against per game.

Brent Burns (SJ vs MIN) – DraftKings, $7,000; FanDuel, $6,600

Burns is back to his old self, averaging a boat load of minutes, and a nightly contender for the double combo meal. Over the last ten games, Burns has averaged 27 minutes of ice time. To go along with almost SEVEN shots / blocks per game. It’s a nice night for Burns matchup wise because the Wild love to funnel shots from the outside and the points. The Wild are giving up the most DK points to opposing defensemen on a nightly basis.

NHL DFS STACKS

Boston 1: Brad Marchand – Patrice Bergeron – David Pastrnak

Edmonton 2: kailer Yamamoto – Leon Draisaitl – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

NY Islanders 1: Anders Lee – Matt Barzal – Jordan Eberle
