NHL Betting Picks: Blue Jackets at Blackhawks | Jan. 29
The Blackhawks and Blue Jackets make up the only game of the slate tonight and we have a couple teams here that are in desperate need of a win. The Blue Jackets are losers of three of their last four games and enter this matchup with Chicago off a shootout loss to the Panthers. Columbus ranks just ninth in goals scored this season, which isn’t overly shocking, but they have been a much poorer defensive team overall in 2021, allowing the 10th-most scoring chances against and the seventh-most shots on goal against per game, after allowing the seventh fewest last year. Part of the Blue Jackets’ issues have come in net, as second-year goalie Elvis Merzlikins hasn’t been able to replicate to replicate last season’s success. Joonas Korpisalo has been solid in four starts, though, with a 0.928 save percentage, and he is likely to start here.

On Chicago’s side, defense and injuries have been huge issues. The Hawks are still without Jonathan Toews or Kirby Dach, two of their top three centers, and remain one of the worst defensive teams in hockey, as they have now allowed the second-most scoring chances against and third-most shots on goal on the young season. The Blackhawks have rebounded from an 0-4 start and are 2-2 in last four games, but they are coming off consecutive overtime shootout losses to the Predators. Their biggest bright spot has been in net. They have received stellar goaltending from Kevin Lankinen, who has a .931 save percentage through four starts. This game sets up as two desperate teams who have played better than their records indicate of late but still struggled defensively to start the year.
Best Bet: Blue Jackets at Blackhawks over 5.5 goals -115 (Fanduel)
The Blue Jackets are coming off the back of a big 3-2 shootout win over Florida, and while the win definitely provides them some momentum, the Blackhawks are catching them at home on the back end of a back-to-back. That advantage alone scares me off of Columbus. However, while the Blackhawks are tempting, I’m also of the opinion that Columbus could be in to make a run back to .500, as they are a better team than their record indicates right now.
The best strategy here seems to be to target the over 5.5 goals, which is a very solid number for any Blackhawks game. Chicago’s trend of giving up a ton of scoring chances every night has carried over from 2020, and while they’re going up against a weaker offense here, the Blue Jackets’ ability to roll three lines with legit scorers on the wing means they have a chance to overwhelm a weak defense. As noted above, the Blue Jackets have also been ceding tons of high-end chances to opponents every night, and with this being their third game in four nights, Chicago’s offense has a chance to jump out quick here too. Lots of books are offering this one, but the OddsShopper tool gives us a great chance to grab it without paying too much juice.
Bonus: Maxi Domi to score a goal +320 (DK Sportsbook)
Domi has a career 10% shot rate and has scored 0.30 goals per game the last two years, so the fact he was kept off the scoresheet over Columbus’ first seven games is intriguing. He’s playing well over 2 minutes per game on the power play right now and finally broke through for his first goal as a Blue Jacket in last night’s game against Florida. Given the weak opponent here, I like this NHL betting pick and am banking on some more positive goal regression for Domi at juicy odds.
