Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul: Boxing Best Bets, Picks and Predictions | 6/6/21

Welcome to the fight of the year, the one where everybody insists they aren’t watching — a product of social media muscles — but will be glued to the set, riding some live action in this ridiculous mess of a boxing match. Everything about Mayweather vs. Paul screams absurdity, but one thing remains undeniable: People are betting. In fact, the money coming in on this fight is piling higher than Logan Paul standing over Floyd Mayweather in one of the more comical weigh-ins in the history of the sport.

There are a couple of quick notes to keep in mind about this upcoming brawl, specifically from a betting standpoint. Yes, it’s an exhibition without any judges, but there will be a ref in the ring to moderate. The gloves went from a normal 10 0unces up to 12 ounces, making a knockout a little more attainable, especially for the smaller Mayweather. Mayweather is one of the best tacticians to ever step into the ring, but he is also one of the most hated individuals in the sport. However, he has found a way to be the sympathetic fighter in all of this, as Paul only fought once before and appears to be universally loathed.

One other note is that this fight cannot be legally bet on in the United States, so there is a pretty cool DK pool to win some money.

DraftKings Main Event Pool

Mayweather comes in as one of the most accomplished fighters in boxing history. His opponent is some guy you wouldn’t be able to pick out of a lineup. Paul (0-1) somehow convinced Mayweather to step in the ring, but all of the restrictions in this exhibition make it a tougher bet all around.

Will the fighters touch gloves before the fight? Yes/No

No. This fight is all about theater, drama and selling us that this thing matters — even though it doesn’t. This also isn’t a sanctioned fight, so Mayweather can truly push the entertainment element. What better way to set the tone of the fight by not even coming out and touching gloves? It is the perfect way to further contrive this drama. Paul could walk out to touch them and Mayweather simply could turn around to the crowd or camera with total disrespect. Remember, he is fully aware at how much of a villain he is in the sport.

Will the fight go the distance? Yes/No

Yes. People are going to get their money’s worth — with a loose definition of “worth” — no matter what happens in this fight. The biggest return outside of winning this pool would be watching this debacle stretch out the full eight rounds on the card. Forget Paul for a second in this play, just look at the actual boxer in this matchup. Mayweather can string this thing along and ensure the fight goes the distance. It is just the nature of how he fights and his opponent being much bigger — assuming Paul can take a couple of glamour shots in the midsection — that just lends this fight to going the full eight. This new celebrity fighter thing needs a fight like this to go eight rounds in order to add any validation to the next one. Yes, there will be a next one.

Will there be a knockdown in the first four rounds? Yes/No

Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding no. In fact, it is unlikely anyone will hit the ground for good in this one. There will be a couple of hard shots, mostly by Mayweather, but in reality neither will try to end this fight with one punch. It is definitely not going to happen in the first half of the fight. Paul is going to have to expend energy because he doesn’t have the power to end Mayweather’s night with a solo shot. He is going to have to outbox one of the best technique fighters in history.

How many knockdowns will there be? O/U 1.5

This is an over despite the previous selection of not having a knockdown in the first four rounds. One key factor is Paul’s overall inexperience in the ring, especially against actual boxers. There is going to be a barrage of shots, or maybe one punch, coming in the later rounds. Paul is going to hit the deck at least once because he won’t be able to handle his own footing. All that’s left is an actual knockdown. It is an eight-round spar for Mayweather, so it’s not like he’s going to be exhausted in the sixth. He could probably go run a marathon after this fight. The point remains, look for him to end this fight in the final round.

Does either boxer touch the ropes in the first round? Yes/No

Yes. There are two competing narratives in how this fight will start, and both have a fighter — Paul — touching the ropes. Here is the beauty taking “yes” here: Bettors are totally covered in the event Mayweather sells this as an actual fight. The best way for people to stay invested in this after the first round is the element of upset. Mayweather can easily sell that by faking like he’s under fire from Paul, even hitting the ropes. The other obvious start would be Paul in way over his head, backed up on the ropes or even a turnbuckle.

Who will be interviewed first after the fight? Mayweather/Paul

It is going to be the reason why you all came to the set and paid money to see this fight in the first place. People paid money to see Mayweather knock out some guy they have never heard of before, like it or not. It would take Paul winning this fight for him to be the first person interviewed, and that simply isn’t happening. There will be long interviews with both fighters after the match, but the first face you’ll see will be Mayweather’s bragging about another victory.

Will Logan Paul call out his next opponent in his in-fight interview? Yes/No

Yes, but only because he will be asked that question. It is ridiculous that even after he loses the fight, Paul wouldn’t be asked, “What’s next?” and that he wouldn’t have something lined up — at least in his head. Maybe he will call out Mike Tyson or George Foreman, but he will definitely have a name ready to go.

Will Mayweather say this is his last fight in his in-fight interview? Yes/No

Don’t worry, Mayweather fans, this will not be the last of him. The evolution of his fights might simply be finding celebrity sparring partners and collecting a huge check. He will always be in high demand and hasn’t degraded the sport enough with this fight to limit the gate around the world. People are betting this thing overseas like crazy, and that alone is enough ammunition to keep Mayweather making money.

Fight Outcome: Mayweather wins

The fight will go the distance with at least two knockdowns, all coming at the expense of Paul. There are no judges, so don’t expect a unanimous decision, but the court of public approval will hand Mayweather the win. Social media is going to have a field day, with the random idiots inserting themselves into the conversation about how Paul “actually won if you look at punches landed, etc.” The biggest factor in this exhibition is the idea of doing more of them and how to sell it to the public. The odds are simply way too absurd to bet on Mayweather but offer no real hope of Paul pulling off the upset. Still don’t believe that Paul has zero chance of winning this fight? Say this out loud, “Floyd Mayweather — the best pound-for-pound fighter of all time — lost to a YouTube streamer.”
