NHL Odds & Betting Picks: Islanders at Capitals | Jan. 28

The Islanders come in with a 3-3 record and on a two-game losing streak. Lack of scoring has been the issue for New York yet again in 2021, as they have potted two or fewer goals in four of their six games this year. The Isles are getting strong goaltending from Semyon Varlamov, who is projected, but not confirmed, to start here. Varlamov took his first loss of the year against the Capitals in the teams first meeting (a 3-2 Capitals win) but still stopped 30 of 32 shots. The Isles rank 10th in penalty-kill percentage thus far and are allowing 29 shots on goal per game. Despite their lack of scoring, it is worth noting that two of their three wins have come by 2 or more goals against weaker opponents, so they have been good puckline targets for betting when facing weaker teams.

The Capitals have done an admirable job holding the fort while Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Samsonov and Dmitry Orlov have missed games due to COVID restrictions. Thus far the Caps are 4-3 on the season but are 2-1 without their captain. Since pairing together two wins in a row to start the year, the Capitals have struggled for consistency, though, and late injuries to both Nicklas Backstrom and Lars Eller in their first game (both are questionable) are big concerns here if you are considering the Caps. Backup goalie Vitek Vanecek has played well thus far and stopped 32 of 34 shots in Washington’s first game against New York two nights ago. They will likely need a repeat performance from him here to pull off another win.

Best Bet: Islanders Moneyline – 132 (DraftKings; Sugarhouse)

Even though the Islanders have been priced down as decent road favorites here, this still feels like a good spot to grab them and take advantage of the short-handed Capitals. Washington has held up well since the loss of several key players to COVID protocols, but this game represents their third in five nights, and we now have possible injuries to Backstrom and Eller to monitor. Fatigue, coupled with the lack of skill upfront, may catch up with them. The game with the Islanders is also a bit of a lookahead spot as Washington has a date with the Bruins on Saturday, which will likely mark the return of Ovechkin and company. Boston players (mainly Brad Marchand) have also come out with critical comments of the Capitals situation, which again could take away focus from the matchup with the Islanders tonight.

There’s also the fact that Islanders are being discounted here a little bit. New York has been it’s typical inconsistent self on offense, but defensively they have looked stellar and have received great goaltending from Varlamov, who has a .966 save percentage through four games. Ultimately, the Capitals would likely be thrilled with a .500 record over their last four games considering the firepower they have been without. The Islanders moneyline looks big enough for me to grab here although, as I mentioned above, the Isles look like solid bets to cover the -1.5 puck line tonight. Whichever bet you decide to take, this is a spot where New York should absolute bottle up a short-handed Caps offense and bounce back after two narrow losses.

Bonus: Vegas Golden Knights vs. St. Louis Blues

Best bet: Golden Knights Puckline (-1.5) +175 (DraftKings)

The Blues have suffered three losses (against four wins) thus far and have yet to string together back-to-back wins on the season. They held on for a 5-4 shootout win in the teams’ first meeting of this two-game series but haven’t really shown they have what it takes to grab two road wins against a team like Vegas. The Blues bring in the fifth-worst penalty kill and are going against a talented Vegas power play. St. Louis has also been trending as a slightly worse defensive team this year ,and two of their three losses have seen them lose by three or more goals. The big plus-money puck line NHL odds here available on Vegas at the DraftKings Sportsbook looks like a NHL betting pick.
