Whether you are a pro making your own PGA betting picks or just getting into the game, betting on golf provides a great way to sweat the action. Like most other professional sports, there are plenty of ways you can bet on golf; with outright winners, head-to-head matchups and plenty more, golf betting offers a wide array of PGA odds and wagers. There will certainly be an edge to be found each and every week, starting with the Sony Open.
That’s why we are debuting our PGA betting series. It consists of three articles:
- Outrights & Each Way (this one)
- Head-to-Head Matchups
- Jason’s Bet of the day (stole this idea from Awesemo’s own Ben Rasa).

Before we dive headfirst into my foursome of picks for this week, I want to make sure that we define terms for those of you who are brand new.
Outright: A bet that is placed on a golfer to win the tournament
Each Way: A bet that covers a golfer for the top-five, top-10 and top-20 bets offered
Article Results (Four Picks Per Week)
- Wins: 0
- Top 5s: 0
- Top 10s: 1
- Top 20s: 2
Collin Morikawa’s less-than-stellar Sunday cost us a solid profit for the week. With the top bet cashing at +170, it was a slightly negative week in terms of an overall return on a per-bet basis. Obviously using a tiered structure, betting more on the top-20s and top-10s, it could have been a profitable week, but that’s entirely too much to calculate for the purposes of a review.
PGA Betting Odds & Picks: Sony Open Outright Bets
Daniel Berger
Outright: 16-1 | Top 5: 4-1 | Top 10: +175 | Top 20: -100
After getting into position last week out on Maui, Berger’s putter let him down on Sunday, leaving him no chance to win. The rest of his game seemed to be in form. He’s giving us an additional (roughly) 35% return over the likes of Webb Simpson, and while he may not have the success here at the Sony Open that Simpson does, he certainly has current form.
Joaquin Niemann
Outright: 28-1 | Top 5: 5.5-1 | Top 10: 2.5-1 | Top 20: +125
After a stellar performance on Maui for the second straight year, Niemann looks to ascend himself into one of the world’s best golfers this year. A win here at the Sony Open would contribute to that great, and at 28-1 odds, I think he’s more likely to win a tournament than Hideki Matsuyama right now, who is priced at 22-1.
Brendon Todd
Outright: 55-1 | Top 5: 8-1 | Top 10: 4-1 | Top 20: 2-1
With a deadly putter from inside 20 feet, Todd can flip a scorecard in a hurry. While he won’t give you much of anything off the tee in terms of distance, he will hit a ton of fairways. Even with losing a bunch of strokes off the tee last week, he still hit 87% of his fairways. That’ll do here this week on the much shorter, tighter Waialae Country Club.
Bomb of the Week: Will Gordon
Outright: 300-1 | Top 5: 50-1 | Top 10: 25-1 | Top 20: +10-1
There are plenty of options to go deep diving this week, but Gordon has shown that he can compete with the best of them on a par-70 course. While Waialae might be a tad different than TPC River Highlands — the course he finished third on — we don’t need a top-five to earn a profit from him this week. As long as he can make it to the weekend, he’ll be in contention for a top-20 come Sunday.
