Round 3 PGA DFS Picks: Arnold Palmer Invitational

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

Corey Conners was able to enjoy the quick turnaround and continued his impressive short game display, which is not something you typically see me write. But, another 2.5 strokes gained putting, and the Canadian has himself a 36 hole lead. Viktor Hovland started his day off right with a birdie and didn’t let up much after that, either shooting a four-under 64, one of the rounds of the day, actually. But, that paled in comparison to Jazz Janetwatanond who had a tournament-best 64 on the day, vaulting himself from out of the cutline to just outside the top 10 heading into the weekend. Will Zalatoris had one of the other more notable rounds from the morning wave shooting 68 on the day, getting himself back into the mix.

Afternoon Wave

The two group star power of the tournament didn’t let us down in the afternoon, providing great shots and all part of the mix in the tournament, well that except for Francesco Molinari, of course, who struggled mightily over these first two days. Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlory & Tyrrell Hatton all played well and gave the fans plenty to cheer for.

For me, my first time back at an event almost two years, it was nice to see the guys up close and personal again. Bryson doesn’t look as big as I thought he would, while Jordan Spieth looks like he’s in the best shape of his life. Stronger, faster & much more confident than when I saw him at the Tournament of Champions back in 2019. Certainly helping his game return to the type of good golf we are used to seeing from the Golden Boy.

Martin Laird & Lanto Griffin, two of the more surprising names up on the leaderboard after round one, continued their impressive play in round two and are the closest competitors to Conners as we start the weekend,

Quick Hitter Round 2 Stat Recap

Conners’ 5.5 strokes gained on the approach on Thursday is a number we likely won’t see out of any category again for quite some time. Maybe putting. On the day, there were ten golfers that were able to gain strokes in all four facets of the strokes gained stats.

  • Jazz Janetwatanaond
  • Jordan Spieth
  • Max Homa
  • Tyrrell Hatton
  • Brendon Todd
  • Lanto Griffin
  • Martin Laird
  • Viktor Hovland
  • Jason Dufner
  • Tommy Fleetwood

General Strategy and Arnold Palmer Invitational PGA DFS Picks

A colder much windier day awaits the golfers in round 3, with the winds expected to come in around 10 AM. They are doing twosomes for Saturday’s round, a nice change of pace from the threesomes we had been getting, which could create a scoring advantage for those going off really early tomorrow morning. I’ll try to give at least two guys teeing off before 10:30 am.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 3 of the Arnold Palmer Invitational

  • Jordan Spieth ($9,400) Given the expected conditions, I’m tempted to not even play anyone from the back off of the slate and try to stack the morning guys and catch the right combination. But, if I had to throw my eggs to one of the leaders, it would be Spieth, whose got the best short game out of any of them. For the same reasons, I like Tommy Fleetwood as well whose shown the ability to weather difficult conditions in the past. His game looks to be in shape as well, so if you want to head to one of the leaders, for me, it’s either one of them before DeChambeau.
  • Tyrrell Hatton ($9,300) After an abysmal start to his title defense, Hatton came backfiring, shooting the second-best round of the day, at a five-under 67. He goes out on the earlier side tomorrow, a full 4 hours before the leaders, and only sits nine back. Given the expected conditions for tomorrow’s round, another 67 could get him within one or two by day’s end and give himself that ever-illusive shot to defend his title.
  • Brendon Todd ($7,100) These tougher conditions are really going to put a strong reliance and emphasis on the short game. No one has been better on and around the greens in recent times than Todd. He also gained in the other three facets as well. Going out nice and early with a 10:05 tee time, he’ll already be more than halfway done with his round when the leaders tee off, and the worst of the weather rolls in.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick for Round 3

Bernd Wiesberger ($6,700) Another Typical Europan Tour player that I have some affinity for tomorrow is Wiesberger. He has had two good days with the iron and putter. The off-the-tee game hasn’t been as stellar. However, I’m hoping the conditions will bring everyone down to him rather than bring him down even further.

DraftKings and FanDuel Genesis Invitational Lineup Fill-Ins

  • Tommy Fleetwood ($8,500)
  • Rickie Fowler ($7,100)
  • Kevin Kisner ($7,200)
  • Hideki Matsuyama ($8,400)
