Against the Grain: Contrarian Fantasy Golf Picks for the Charles Schwab Challenge | DraftKings

Staying down South, the PGA Tour goes for the annual stop in the Ft. Worth, Texas area. With only 125 players in the field this week, 6-for-6 percentages should be higher, and ownership will be a bit more concentrated for the fantasy golf contests on all sites. For this tournament, I will go through three pricing sections, speaking about the highest owned and some of my favorite PGA DFS against-the-grain picks for the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Fantasy Golf Picks for Charles Schwab Challenge

$9,000 and Above

  • 14 Golfers

If nothing else, DraftKings is pretty consistent with how they price out the field. There are 14 golfers again at least $9,000 this week, with combined ownership just shy of 200%. The highest owned of the bunch, Abraham Ancer, sprung to life on Sunday with one of the rounds of the week at 7 under and got himself all the way inside the Top-20 and a lot of attention this week. Joaquin Niemann has the longest made cut streak on the PGA Tour, sitting at 18 now, and gamers are taking note, he’ll be owned over 20% as well. Corey Conners is trending just higher than that number, while Justin Rose, Charley Hoffman and Tony Finau will all come up just shy of 20% owned.

Then there’s a bit of drop-off to the guys up top, lead though by Collin Morikawa, who has arguably the best course fit of anyone above $10,000 and it seems to be trending in the best direction. Of course, Jordan Spieth will never be overlooked at this golf course. Even during his worst years as a PGA Tour pro, he managed to find himself in the Top-10 a few times. It’s just his style of golf, and with that comes around 15% ownership. Patrick Reed, Sungjae Im, Daniel Berger and Justin Thomas, along with Will Zalatoris, all are in spots to leverage, coming in just around 10% owned.

Top Against the Grain Fantasy Golf Picks

Finding the low-owned studs can be so helpful to winning lineups, and this week we have a few options. Gary Woodland and Jason Kokrak. While I like both, I think Kokrak is the safer bet this week. As Woodland’s game is trending, it’s still a bit wild off the tee, especially for this course.

Mid-Range ($8,900-$7,500)

  • 23 golfers

You guessed it, twenty-three golfers, again, in this price range. Spanning 240% total ownership, with the highest owned golfer in the slate, by far, coming from it. Brian Harman, who hasn’t missed a cut here in a very long time, filled with a bunch of top 20s and 30s, is deemed as the safest play of the year, it seems, give his expected 35% ownership. Emiliano Grillo and Chris Kirk are both projecting to be highly owned as well, but not nearly as high as Harman is. Since Harman is soaking up close to 15% of that 240%, there are only five other golfers that are projecting over 10% this week.

  • Matt Kuchar
  • Si Woo Kim
  • Sergio Garcia
  • Charley Hoffman
  • Justin Rose

Only eight golfers mentioned so far, out of the 233. Golfers like Kevin Streelman and Cameron Tringale, along with Matt Jones and Billy Horschel, all projected near 10%, which does leave room to leverage the upside.

  • Matt Wallace

The Rest ($7,400 and Below)

  • 90+ Golfers

Even with 90 plus names remaining, there is actually quite a bit of interest going to golfers in this section. A couple of names that are trending towards the 10% ownership mark this week include names like:

  • Harold Varner
  • Joel Dahmen
  • Patton Kizzire
  • Carlos Ortiz
  • Brendon Todd
  • J.T. Poston
  • Michael Thompson

Outside of them, however, no one golfer is projected over 5%. A few names down here to be on the lookout for include:

  • Andrew Putnam
  • Sahith Theegala
  • Adam Hadwin
  • Sebastian Munoz
  • Richy Werenski
  • Talor Gooch

Of those, Talor Gooch has the highest projected point total of any golfer actually, in this price range, projected for 54.6 points. Click Here to see the full set of projections.
