Against the Grain: PGA DFS Picks for the Mayakoba Golf Classic l DraftKings & FanDuel

The Millionaire Maker has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t life-changing amounts of money to still be won in PGA DFS. This week, the tour heads to Playa Del Carmen Mexico for the Mayakoba Classic just across the Gulf of Mexico from where I sit now. Ownership will be incredibly important, as it is every week, and there are tons of against-the-grain PGA DFS picks to choose from for our fantasy golf lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel. Let’s dig in.

PGA DFS Picks: $9,500-$12,000

  • 8 Golfers
  • Total ownership of around 30%

There are just eight golfers this week above $9,500, two or three shy of what we typically get. It is no surprise at all to see Justin Thomas come in as the projected highest owned given the fact that he’s only a couple hundred cheaper than Brooks Koepka. That will push Thomas’ ownership upwards of 35-40% in some contests as gamers chase the best player in the field. They’ll likely pair him up with either Abraham Ancer or a couple of higher-owned guys in the next price section, Russell Henley and Corey Conners. Harris English will likely be in a lot of lineups that don’t have Thomas as the first guy in the lineup, as he projects out to be around 20% as well. I suspect Thomas and English won’t be paired up all that much, as the salary left is not very appetizing.

Next up on the ownership list Viktor Hovland, who has some varying levels of success here at El Camaleon. He missed the cut in each of his last two tries but came in the top 10 as an amateur a few years back. He’s going to be in the mid-range ownership, around 15%, as will Daniel Berger, making his first start in the last four weeks.

Then lastly, we’ll get three golfers to choose from that I suspect will be owned under or right at 10% this week: Koepka, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler.

I actually don’t mind any of those three. Of course, the affinity for Thomas this week will push me away from these three for any core plays, but I think ill get about 15% of all of them in GPPs to have that leverage.

PGA DFS Picks: Nos. 11-32 Priced Golfers ($7,500-$9,400)

  • 27 Golfers
  • Total ownership 244%

For me, when I see two guys I wasn’t keen on playing anyway as two of the highest-owned guys in the slate, it’s an easy fade. Both Conners and Henley will be paired up with Thomas a ton. Also getting a ton of mentions and relatively high ownership is the young stud out of Wake Forest, Will Zalatoris. With 27 golfers in this section, totaling around 240% of total ownership, there’s still plenty of allocations to go here. Another eight golfers outside of Zalatoris, Conners and Henley will get over 10% this week. Those golfers are:

  • Joel Dahmen
  • Billy Horschel
  • Chez Reavie
  • Brian Harman
  • Sebastian Munoz
  • Harold Varner
  • Joaquin Niemann
  • Carlos Ortiz
  • Russell Knox

And even after them, there will be a handful of golfers that will be owned around 10% this week, including Adam Long, Brendon Todd and Kevin Streelman.

Then, however, we should get about 10 or so golfers that are projected to be under 10%, and even some under 5%:

  • Gary Woodland
  • Scott Piercy
  • Keegan Bradley
  • Emiliano Grillo
  • Alex Noren
  • Byeong Hun An
  • Charles Howell III

Woodland is starting to become intriguing, but I can’t get myself to play him until I know he’s healthy, something I don’t think he is right now. The other six on that last list, though, look like pretty good leverage spots to me. All of Piercy, Bradley, Grillo, Noren and Howell played admirably last time out at the RSM Classic, while An is as cheap and low owned as he’s been in quite some time.

PGA DFS Picks: The Rest ($7,400 and Below)

  • 93 golfers
  • Total ownership 225 %

fantasy golf PGA DFS Picks Mayakoba Classic DraftKings FanDuel

Even though we’ve covered 40 or so golfers, there are over 93 still left with something unsaid. The value to deep dive price section will be headed by Denny McCarthy, who has had a bit of an erratic fall swing. Next up will be Peter Malnati, who boasts a similar game to McCarthy but seems to be much more consistent right now. There are plenty of other names that will be owned over 5% from this section this week, and those include:

  • Brian Stuard
  • Adam Hadwin
  • Tyler Duncan
  • Mark Hubbard
  • Henrik Norlander
  • Maverick McNealy
  • Vaughn Taylor
  • Doug Ghim
  • Kyle Stanley

As we know, 5-10% doesn’t deem those players chalky by any stretch, so if you like any of them, going overweight on them isn’t going to take much. If you are looking to get 10% owned of a golfer and still have leverage against the field, these following golfers will likely give you triple the field at 10% ownership this week:

  • Ollie Schniederjans
  • Aaron Wise
  • Cameron Percy
  • John Huh
  • Kristoffer Ventura
  • William Gordon
  • Andy Ogletree

I stated last week that I really liked Ghim in that spot at $6,700 and lower ownership, and it looks like the price bump of $700 will again keep ownership low. I’m comfortable riding that wave again here this week. A couple of others that will be in my top tier of ownership from these last bulleted lists include Kyle Stanley, William Gordon, Kristoffer Ventura, John Huh and Andy Ogletree.
