Above the Cut: PGA DFS Advice & Daily Fantasy Golf Picks for The Travelers Championship on DraftKings & FanDuel

The PGA Tour heads across the country from San Diego to Cromwell, Conn., for the Travelers Championship. This isn’t a major-level field, but some of the world’s best golfers are teeing off this week. On the PGA DFS side, the prize pools are still elevated, and this more resembles a traditional week on tour. Streaks, bonuses and general scoring all will be back to normal. There is a ton to break down both on the course and field, so let’s dive into the DFS golf advice and best daily fantasy golf picks this week for DraftKings and FanDuel lineups.

The Course

TPC River Highlands is a par 70 measuring around 6,850 yards, making it one of the shortest courses players will ever see. Scoring should be good, so birdie makers will have the advantage as usual, but this course has shown that different types of players can win this event. Dustin Johnson won last year, but the long-term history shows how many different skillsets can excel here. Bubba Watson has multiple wins here, but Chez Reavie, Russell Knox and Jordan Spieth are also recent winners at Travelers.

The course seems to have easy-to-hit fairways with the shorter holes, so targeting guys who can dial it in with the approaches seems like the way to go. There are a lot of bunkers around the green, so ability to scramble never hurts. For the most part, however, the focus is on guys who can hit greens and set themselves up with birdie looks. Greens are a poa/bent mix, but that’s more of a secondary factor than something to heavily weigh this week. This week will be more about finding golfers with solid form who excel in one of the many areas that translate here.

The Field

There is a drop in field strength relative to the US Open, but this is still a field with some big names. Dustin Johnson leads pricing, followed by Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka. The $9,000s are also littered with top-end players, and depth doesn’t become an issue until the mid-range. The $6,000 range is weak, but that’s not atypical for salary savers. The cut is back to the traditional top 65 and ties after shrinking, but anytime there are 156 golfers in a field, 6-for-6 percentages are going to be low.

Daily Fantasy Golf Picks This Week | Travelers Championship

Top Priced: Abraham Ancer $9,100 DraftKings, $11,000 FanDuel

Paul Casey is the safest play on the board and at a reasonable price tag this week. There is zero issue in starting with him and he is cash viable, but according to Awesemo’s premium ownership projections, he may be the highest owned player on the slate. Keep that in mind when building this week. In addition to Casey, Ancer is another guy in the $9,000 range to buy on. He is coming off a disappointing missed cut at the US Open, but his irons still were clicking. He gained 5.2 strokes on the approach, and if it were not for a cold putter, he would have found the weekend at Torrey Pines. Ancer can now lean on his accuracy off the tee at this course, and that should set up a ton of looks with his irons. He has four runner-up finishes over the last two seasons and has plenty of other top-end finishes without a win. At $9,100 he could be an extremely conservative first man in or a second golfer behind one of the bigger names in the field. Do not let the slip up last week deter from Ancer, as he is in a fantastic spot to get in the hunt.

Other Daily Fantasy Golf Picks – Joaquin Niemann, Patrick Cantlay

Mid-Range: Aaron Wise $7,400 DraftKings, $9,000 FanDuel

There are a lot of guys in the mid-range who are playing well and have the skills to compete here. It is an interesting lineup construction week, with a strong $9,000 range and then nothing for a big stretch of salaries working down. This creates a situation where the mid-$7,000 range fits a ton of different builds, and that is where guys like Wise come in. He is one of the best plays on the slate. Wise has found the range with the putter, gaining 2.5 and 3.5 in the last two tournaments. That broke a stretch that saw him lose in eight of nine events, and that was the biggest hurdle to his success. He was 17th at the PGA and landed in the top 10 at a strong Memorial field, so it is all systems go here. Wise has quality iron play, and with all the wedge opportunities here, he is a solid putting week from crushing this price tag.

Lower Priced: Chez Reavie $7,000 DraftKings, FanDuel $8,700

One of the benefits of going mostly balanced this week is not needing to dig super deep for cheap plays. That is not to say $6,000 will not be in the player pool, but a lot of lineups can end with $7,000 golfers. The flat $7,000 range has several names like Russell Knox and Kyle Stanley, but don’t forget Reavie. Although Reavie didn’t make much noise last week, he still found the weekend and was a fine punt play.

More importantly, his ball-striking numbers were strong once again. He gained 5.8 strokes with the approach, and if it were not for 4.7 strokes lost on the greens, he easily could have crashed into the top 25. Reavie is a former winner at Travelers, and it makes sense given this layout and the way his game is constructed. Coming off two straight weeks of quality ball striking, there is zero reason to jump off now.

Other Daily Fantasy Golf Picks – Hank Lebioda, Rickie Fowler
