Fantasy Golf Sleepers & GPP Picks for 2022 The Players Championship DraftKings & FanDuel Lineups This Week

Jason Rouslin

DraftKings PGA DFS fantasy golf picks this week RBC Heritage 2022 lineups Dustin Johnson

With 144 players in the field at this week’s PGA Tour event at TPC Sawgrass, there will be plenty of opportunities to find golfers that not many gamers know about and create the edge necessary to score big at the 2022 Players Championship. Finding the right mix of low-owned golfers and chalk is critical when making your fantasy golf picks this week, especially for the Millionaire Maker contests on DraftKings. To win such a large field event, with the biggest prize in DFS, it takes the right mix.

PGA DFS Millionaire Maker Review

Typically, to win the Milly maker a few bare minimums are necessary. While one out of the last 12 Millionaire Makers has not had a winner in the lineup, it is the most important element. Then at least two more in the top five and one more in the top 10 allow the lineup to find golfers that score a lot of DFS points and may not finish highly in the event. A great example of this is the winning Millionaire Maker lineup from the most recent one at the British Open:

One other huge element is the golfers owned under 5%. There are two of them in this lineup; even with the Jordan Spieth and Louis Oosthuizen chalk, it managed to be a unique lineup among 296,000 entries. The total ownership of the lineup was 78%, right on the average of the last 12. Here are a few more stats on the previous 12 Millionaire Maker contests for the lowest-money buy-in:

  • 12 golfers

With everyone in the world’s top 10 but Bryson DeChambeau teeing it up this week, pricing is expected to be very tight. There are 12 golfers up here, and according to midweek projections, only two of them will be owned less than 10%. Justin Thomas is getting most of the early looks as the defending champion of the event, coming in at just $10,400 this week. Patrick Cantlay and the hottest golfer in the world, Scottie Scheffler, are the two other golfers that are projected for more than 20% ownership. Then there is a batch of golfers that are likely to be owned between 13% and 17%:

  • Jon Rahm
  • Collin Morikawa
  • Viktor Hovland
  • Xander Schauffele
  • Hideki Matsuyama
  • Cameron Smith

Surprisingly, some of these names are not above 20% owned. Rahm is the most noteworthy, as the market seems to cool off on him since he is underperforming relative to his salary.

This week one of the three projected lowest-owned golfers above $9,000 happens to be Rory McIlroy ($10,800). A former winner of the event coming off a week where he performed his best for 18 holes, is being overlooked this week mainly due to his salary. He has been priced lower than at least four of the names on that list above several times, but he gets the premium price here this week. Then comes the two golfers that will be owned under 10%, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson. Their performances at this event could not be further apart, with Spieth missing the weekend four of seven trips and only finishing top five once. For Johnson, other than his withdrawal in 2013, he has not missed a cut here in 10 trips, and he has one top-five and two other top-20s. But conditions are expected to be difficult, and that tends to favor golfers with a good short game. Spieth has that, and Johnson can get hot in that department. Both should be looked at in mass GPPs for those reasons, in addition to their projected low ownership.

PGA DFS Mid-Range ($8,900-$7,500)

  • 18 golfers

It is rare to see five golfers at the same price on DraftKings, and it is even rarer that they are all big names and solid plays. But they fall out of this price point, and thus this price range checks in with about four fewer golfers than normal. In this range Matt Fitzpatrick is likely going to be the highest-owned golfer in most contests. He could come in over 30% in some spots, and Billy Horschel is not too far behind. Daniel Berger is the last candidate of golfers that may get over 20% ownership this week. Next up will be a slew of golfers that will be owned between 10% and 15%:

The putting woes for Will Zalatoris have dropped interest in him quite a bit, as he is one of eight golfers projected for 10% ownership or less this week. Others in this range include Louis Oosthuizen, Abraham Ancer, Webb Simpson, Max Homa, Marc Leishman and Jason Day. All of those golfers should be owned between 7% and 10% this week, but none of them will be as lowly owned as Tony Finau. A bad start to the season and not-so-great results at TPC Sawgrass dictate the lowest ownership Finau has had in years. At just 3% owned, he is worth a spot in at least 5-10% of lineups.

PGA DFS Value Plays ($7,400 and Below)

  • 105 golfers

Over the last few weeks, there has not been much interest in owning golfers in this price range over 10%, but that changes this week with the strong field. There are 10 names that have a chance to be owned or will definitely be owned over 10%:

  • Talor Gooch
  • Sergio Garcia
  • Russell Henley
  • Paul Casey
  • Corey Conners
  • Si Woo Kim
  • Jason Kokrak
  • Alex Noren
  • Cameron Young
  • Chris Kirk

With close to 100% or more going to those 10 names and 350%-plus already used up on golfers above, 90 golfers will equate to about 1.5% ownership per player. That is an excellent setup for gamers that like to go against the grain. A few names that will be under 5% owned this week include:

  • Justin Rose
  • Patrick Reed
  • Luke List
  • Lanto Griffin
  • Mackenzie Hughes
  • Bubba Watson
  • Brian Harman
  • Francesco Molinari
  • Aaron Wise
  • Adam Hadwin
  • Matt Kuchar

Among those golfers — and almost every golfer in the field — Aaron Wise is the best value according to Awesemo’s PGA DFS Projections, with a projected score of 58.7 points. Be sure to check out how all of the Awesemo experts are ranking these golfers in the Pro Plays Tool.
