The First Cut: The Masters Guide & Player Preview at Augusta National PGA DFS Picks | 4/5/21

Older Past Champions (8)

This year there are eight older past champions in the field. While crazier things have happened, like Bernhard Langer ending up in the final group with Smylie Kaufman a few years back, it’s rare that any of these golfers will make any real noise in the tournament.

  1. Sandy Lyle

    • Age & Birthplace: 63/Scotland
    • How They Qualified: 1988 Masters Champion
    • Recent Form:

      • 2019: MC
      • 2018: MC
      • 2017: MC
    • Statistical Profile: N/A
    • Bet for the Week: As much as I’d love to see Lyle play all four days, it just isn’t there. -2500 to miss the cut is the only bet available.
    • Quick Notes: The 1988 champion of the event came close to making the cut last year but ultimately fell just short. His last made cut was back in 2013 where he finished 44th.
  2. Ian Woosnam

    1. Age & Birthplace: 63/Wales
    2. How They Qualified: 1991 Masters Champion

      • 2019: MC
      • 2018: MC
      • 2017: MC
    5. Statistical Profile: N/A
    6. Bet for the Week: Similar to Lyle, -5000 is the only bet available.
    7. Quick Notes: The 1991 champion of the event has struggled mightily here the last 10 years or so, not making one cut. He sat out last year’s event but is well enough to play this year and will try to make the weekend for the first time in the last two decades.
  3. Larry Mize

    • How They Qualified: 1987 Masters Champion
    • Recent Form: N/A
    • Masters Form:

      • 2019: MC
      • 2018: MC
      • 2017: MC
    • Statistical Profile: N/A
    • Bet for the Week: To miss the cut -2000
    • Quick Notes: The oldest golfer in the field is looking to make his first cut in quite some time.
  4. Jose Maria Olazabal

    • Age & Birthplace: 55/Spain
    • How They Qualified: 1994 & 1999 Masters Champion
    • Recent Form: N/A
    • Masters Form:

      • 2018: MC
      • 2017: MC
    • Statistical Profile: N/A
    • Bet for the Week:  To miss the Cut -1667
    • Quick Notes: The two-time green jacket winner from Spain will be looking to make his first cut here since 2013. He hasn’t been competing much on any tour, but when he’s healthy he loves to come to these hallowed grounds and give it a go.
  5. Vijay Singh

    • Age & Birthplace: 58/Fiji
    • How They Qualified: 2000 Masters Champion
    • Recent Form:
      • MC
      • 20th
    • Masters Form:
      • 2020: WD
      • 2019: MC
      • 2018: 49
      • 2017: MC
    • Statistical Profile: N/A
    • Bet for the Week: To miss the cut -590
    • Quick Notes: Before Tiger Woods burst on the scene, Singh had some of the best results at Augusta in recent times. With the win in 2000 and five other top-10s, Singh has racked up 19 made cuts in 28 tries. He last made the weekend in 2018, where he finished 49th.
  6. Fred Couples

    1. Age & Birthplace: 61/Seattle, WA
    2. How They Qualified: 1985, 1993 Masters Champion
    3. Recent Form:
      • 14th
      • 11th
    4. Masters Form:
      • 2020: 29
      • 2019: 38
      • 2018: 62
      • 2017: MC
    5. Statistical Profile: N/A
    6. Bet for the Week: +180 to Make the cut
    7. Quick Notes: Couples has looked good in each of his showings on the Champions Tour this year, coming in fourth and 20th. That is not bad for a 61-year old who battles chronic back problems. Still, it is a joy to watch swing the club, having one of the best-tempoed golf swings of all time.
  7. Bernhard Langer

    • Age & Birthplace: 61/Seattle, WA
    • How They Qualified: 1992 Masters Champion
    • Recent Form:
      • 20th
      • 4th
    • Masters Form:
      • 2020: MC
      • 2019: MC
      • 2018: 38
      • 2017: 18
    • Statistical Profile: N/A
    • Bet for the Week: +125 to make the cut
    • Quick Notes: Making each of the last three cuts, this crafty veteran can get around Augusta better than most of the world’s best. While it may be a course-specific thing, the ability to dissect a golf course that most others can’t do is fun to watch. He won’t be hitting it 300 yards many times this week, if at all, but he’ll likely be there on Friday under or around the cut line.
  8. Mike Weir

    • Age & Birthplace: 61/Canada
    • How They Qualified: 2003 Masters Champion
    • Recent Form:
      • 2nd
      • 7th
    • Masters Form:
      • 2020: 51
      • 2019: MC
      • 2018: MC
      • 2017: MC
    • Statistical Profile: N/A
    • Bet for the Week: Wier +200 to Make the cut.
    • Quick Notes: Breaking a five-year missed cut streak, Weir’s career resurgence seemed to take a lot from that made cut back in November. He’s carried that momentum forward to this year, coming in the top 10 in each of the last two events on the Champions Tour. He should be right around the cut line on Friday, just like he was back in November.
