PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel | Travelers Championship Round 4

Some say that the real tournament doesn’t start till the back nine on Sunday afternoon. While the saying is typically applied to Augusta National and The Masters, it can be applied here to daily fantasy golf as well, with so many scoring opportunities on it. We’ve seen plenty of golfers take it extremely low on Sunday, including Jim Furyk’s 58 years ago. He went from almost dead last in the field to inside the top 5. That shows you are never out of at The Travelers. Let’s get to the DraftKings and FanDuel PGA DFS picks for the final round of the Travelers Championship.

Previous Round Recap

So many qualities names were out early in the morning, and for one of the world’s best, it would take 90 minutes or so to get going. Opening with six straight pars, Dustin Johnson would catch fire and birdie the next three before settling in with a five-under 65 on the day. That moved him up 49 spots on the leaderboard from barely making the cut to inside the top 10 heading into the final round and only three back of the lead. Abraham Ancer was the other big mover on the day, as he rode a hole-in-one on the 8th hole to a four-under 66. He, too, goes from just making the cut to a shot at another top 10 come to the end of day tomorrow.

They’ll be chasing a three-time winner of the event Bubba Watson who used some magic around the green to produce a good score today but struggled with his irons again, something that may prevent him from winning a fourth time at TPC River Highlands. Kramer Hickok put his third straight solid round in, as he’ll be looking for his first-ever PGA Tour win. Two Aussies are part of the nearest chasing pack, as Cameron Smith has broken out of a slump and put together a very nice 66 today, jumping him from a tie for 20th to a tie for third.

Jason Day is the second half of the Aussie chase pack who looks visibly injured out there, yet still gaining strokes off the tee, regardless of what his back may look like. In fact, he may withdraw before the start of the round tomorrow. You just never know. It’s all part of the Jason Day experience. Luckily for us, he’s nowhere near Disney World.

Awesemo's Top Golfer Tool is an Ace Since golf performances are largely uncorrelated between one golfer and the next, aside from weather impacts, a good way to view a PGA DFS lineup is as a parlay, where you have to hit all 6 picks to hit. The Awesemo Top Golfer Tool gives you the probabilities that each golfer will finish top 6, as well as their 25%, 50%,and 75% results as a benchmark for how you can expect each golfer to perform at the tournament.

DraftKings

  • DraftKings is offering $50,000 to first place and $150,000 guaranteed for the final-round slate.

Travelers Championship PGA DFS Picks

Having set up the possibility of a 59 tomorrow, it’s not out of the question to suspect someone that is four under could go out and win this thing. Now, there are 39 golfers ahead of them, so the task would be very tall, but given that that -4 is only three strokes out of the top 10, almost the entire leaderboard is in play.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 4 of Travelers Championship

  • Dustin Johnson ($9,800)  If he’s not the highest owned golfer in tomorrow’s slate, then I’m not sure what’s going on. His price, for some reason, DraftKings decided to drop down for the final slate, and yet of all the studs, he’s the lowest on the leaderboard. Bryson DeChambeau is tied with him, while Patrick Cantlay & Brooks Koepka are trailing behind by a bit, which creates a bubble in ownership. But, that could lead to lower ownership on at least one if not two of them. Cantlay is the prime target, given he’s the highest salary on the board, but Brooks is the furthest down the board. I think they’ll all get plenty of looks tomorrow, but a true against the grain play would be either Scottie Scheffler ($10,000) or Joaquin Niemann($9,200) for tomorrow’s slate.
  • Charley Hoffman ($7,900) A little bit of Jekyll and Hyde this week for Hoffman, who put it all together in round two but has had something go awry in each of the other two rounds. On Thursday, it was his ball-striking, and today it was his around the green work. Never his putter, though, so if he is on the every other day plan, he should have a chance at a top 5 by day’s end as long as that stays hot.
  • Troy Merritt ($7,500) Quietly, or maybe not to some, Meritt has been putting together a really nice stretch of golf. It started back at the Valspar with a tie for 8th. He added two more top 10s in the ensuing three weeks and has now made four straight cuts. He enters the day in a tie for ninth tomorrow and has enjoyed success on and around the green, as well as his approaches. But, the off the tee game hasn’t been as cooperative as the others. If that flips tomorrow, he could beat his best finish in recent times, which is a tie for 7th.

Sneaky Pick for the Round 4 Showdown

  • J.B Holmes ($6,100): Plaquged by injures, Holmes has put in his worst season in some time on the PGA Tour. With only six cuts made in 15 tries, and no finish better than 46th, Holmes needs this week to get back on track. His irons have been doing him well the last two rounds, finally finding a grove. He’s gained almost three strokes over the two of them. His putter has been good all week, and it seems to be giving him confidence through his bag. At these price levels, he’s a great option for an aggressive lineup build.
