This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy lineups and find a couple of recommendations for the final round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. In a typical Showdown GPP, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first place for Rounds 2 and 3 tournaments and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first place on the average. Lastly, FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final-round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first place in their PGA DFS showdown contests.

Previous Round Recap

With the second round finishing up early Saturday morning, a few golfers with a bit of cut sweat still remained. Things ended up settling in at one-under, but not by much, t64. That sent groups out in threesomes playing off of two tees today, with Justin Thomas one of the first golfers out on the back nine. The best golfer in the field didn’t disappoint on Saturday, shooting a tournament-low 63 and getting himself back in the tournament. With overnight leader Emiliano Grillo not keeping pace but still shooting a good score of 68, it sets Thomas up for a big Sunday come from behind win here at El Camaleon.

Also getting themselves into the mix tomorrow were Viktor Hovland & Adam Long. Hovland is trying to beat Finau and break the curse of the Puerto Rico Open, while Long, has been close a bunch this fall and will have yet another chance. Another guy springing to form here in the last week of the PGA Tour season is Tom Hoge who has been lurking around the lead all week and finds himself playing in the final group for tomorrow’s round.

Top-10

Coming off of a 62 and a 63 respectively on Saturday, it’s going to be really hard not to play both Viktor Hovland and Justin Thomas in tomorrow’s slate. The fact that Emiliano Grillo is $9,300 even makes it relatively easy to get all three of these guys in, given the options below $7,000.  If you are looking to go against the grain up top, instead of playing Hovland/Thomas, look to Tony Finau and Joaquin Niemann. Both are expensive but they will certainly go much lower owned than the first two. Also in the mix for some lower owned options are Brendon Todd and Carlos Ortiz.

PGA DFS Picks From Outside the top-10:

  • Abraham Ancer may be an “obvious” play, he hasn’t made a bogey in at least 36 holes. If you include the first round, it’s been 43 holes without a bogey. This course is made for someone like him, who favors accuracy over distance off the tee. I’ll hope for around 20% ownership and try to get 3x that, at least, for my lineups.
  • Billy Horschel has been quietly going about his business this week and he finally found a good round today, shooting 65. Horschel was in the winning lineup for round three, and the stats look good. He’s 12th in greens in regulation and 37th in driving accuracy. He seems like a good candidate to shoot up the board a bit tomorrow.
  • Akshay Bhatia and Andy Ogletree, I needed to write them up one more time, as I’m still going to try to squeeze a bit more of a return out of these guys. Bhatia, is in the second optimal lineup according to my ratings, and the first that also features Thomas, so it seems he presents a nice value below $7,000.

Sleeper Pick for the PGA DFS Final Round Slate

Maverick McNealy ($6,700) After making the cut on the number, McNealy put the putter to work and fired a 63 on Saturday to jolt up the board. Anytime this guy makes the weekend he is a force to be reckoned with. McNealy is one of the best putters in the game when he’s got it rolling. Maybe I’m buying a day late and a dollar short, but with his putting potential and a course that is getting easier, not harder, by the day, I’ll roll him out again tomorrow, looking for him to try and back door a top-10.

Lineup Fill-Ins

Will Zalatoris ($8,900)

Daniel Berger ($9,800)

Brice Garnett ($6,500)

Corey Conners ($8,500)
